Innovation Water Sustainability Conference 2025 Kicks Off in Jeddah

Opening Ceremony

On Monday in Jeddah, His Highness Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Jalawi, Governor of Jeddah, officially opened the Innovation Driven Water Sustainability (IDWS) Conference 2025. The event is held under the esteemed patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalid bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz, who serves as an Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Governor of the Makkah Region, and on behalf of His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz, the Deputy Governor of the Region.

This year marks the fourth iteration of the IDWS Conference, taking place at The Ritz-Carlton Jeddah. Spanning three days, the conference is designed to foster global partnerships and innovative solutions aimed at addressing urgent water sustainability challenges. Bringing together policymakers, engineers, scientists, and innovators, the event highlights the imperative to advance water conservation, management, and sustainable use.

Scale and Participation

This year’s conference boasts impressive participation statistics, including representatives from 139 countries and 10,000 attendees. With 107 exhibitors and over 188 speakers scheduled to present, the IDWS 2025 showcases a strong community commitment to advancing knowledge and innovative approaches for a secure water future. The conference also features 76 scientific papers, emphasizing a collaborative spirit in tackling water-related issues.

Keynote Highlights

The opening keynote address was delivered by His Excellency Eng. Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Abdulkarim, President of the Saudi Water Authority (SWA). He emphasized Saudi Arabia’s prominent role in global discussions about water security, regulation, and innovative partnerships.

In his address, Al-Abdulkarim stressed the pressing challenges posed by water scarcity, noting that while progress has been made in providing access to safe water for millions, over two billion people still face difficulties in this regard. Highlighting the economic ramifications, he remarked that about 60% of global output is tied to water-dependent sectors, yet investment in innovative technologies remains below 1%.

Innovators Recognized

As part of the opening day’s agenda, the conference celebrated industry innovators through the Global Prize for Innovation in Water Award. This accolade acknowledges leading initiatives in water production, treatment, reuse, and digital solutions. Notably, Guihua Yu from the University of Texas at Austin received the grand prize for the Discovery Award, while the Breakthrough Award went to HanQing Yu of the University of Science and Technology of China.

Strategic Discussions on Water Resilience

A focus of the conference discussions was on public-sector leadership and international collaboration as vital pillars for enhancing water resilience. David Gadis, CEO of District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority, shared insights into tackling water scarcity in the U.S. capital. He outlined a comprehensive four-step strategy that includes protecting primary water sources, advancing feasible solutions, implementing detailed feasibility studies, and improving water distribution systems.

The panel titled “Global Innovation Leadership: Driving Progress Through the Public Sector to Achieve Water Sustainability” explored how various nations tackle critical challenges via advanced research and technology.

Effective Communication with the Public

Panelists like Denis Bilodeau, President of the Orange County Water District, emphasized the necessity of transparent messaging to build public trust in water management initiatives. He recounted the successful rollout of a wastewater treatment process, which garnered widespread public and legislative support due to effective communication strategies.

Recognizing Saudi Arabia’s Leadership

The Saudi Water Authority gained recognition from Guinness World Records for operating the world’s largest water innovation oasis, underscoring the Kingdom’s pioneering efforts in fields like desalination and water management. Measuring 33,395.88 square meters, this facility stands as a testament to the Kingdom’s commitment to developing advanced technologies and sustainable practices.

A Platform for Action and Collaboration

Muhaideb Al-Muhaideb, Vice President for Financial Affairs at SWA, encapsulated the conference’s spirit by expressing the Kingdom’s ambition to address global water challenges. “IDWS acts as a catalyst for inspiring solutions that matter,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts between innovators, investors, and policymakers.

As IDWS 2025 progresses, the focus shifts to various Water Academy programs and impactful technical briefings aimed at reshaping water usage worldwide. A highlight of Day Two includes the kickoff of the Miyahthon—a unique “water hackathon” that brings together diverse talent to co-create innovative solutions to pressing water sector challenges.

In summary, IDWS 2025 is not merely an event; it signifies Saudi Arabia’s evolving role as a hub of innovation and collaboration in the global water landscape. With a commitment to redefining the future of water sustainability through technology and partnership, the Kingdom is poised to play a crucial role in ongoing global efforts to tackle water-related issues.
