Hub71 Selects 27 Startups for Cohort 18, Marking First All-International Intake with 1.1% Acceptance Rate

Hub71, the global tech ecosystem based in Abu Dhabi, has announced the selection of 27 startups for its Access Programme as part of Cohort 18. This decision follows a record 2,453 applications from 112 countries, showcasing the increasing global interest in Abu Dhabi as a hub for innovation. The chosen startups have collectively raised an average of AED31.2 million, amounting to nearly AED844.7 million in total funding, highlighting the readiness of these companies to expand internationally.

Competitive Selection Process

Cohort 18 boasts a notably low acceptance rate of 1.1%, marking a significant milestone as it is the first cohort to consist entirely of startups headquartered outside the UAE. This development underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as a premier destination for tech entrepreneurs seeking to establish and scale their ventures. All selected startups are currently in the process of obtaining licenses and setting up operations in Abu Dhabi, reflecting the streamlined process for startups to operate within the emirate.

The selection process also revealed that 31% of applications were referred through Hub71’s partner and founder networks, indicating robust confidence in the ecosystem and the effectiveness of community-driven sourcing in attracting high-growth startups.

Diverse Ecosystem Focus

The 27 startups will participate in Hub71’s sector-agnostic Access Programme, as well as specialized ecosystems such as Hub71+ Digital Assets, Hub71+ ClimateTech, and Hub71+ Life Sciences. This diverse mix aligns with Abu Dhabi’s strategic priorities in fostering growth across regulated digital finance, climate technologies, and health innovation. Specifically, seven startups will join Hub71+ Life Sciences, six will be part of Hub71+ Digital Assets, and five will integrate into Hub71+ ClimateTech.

Ahmad Ali Alwan, CEO of Hub71, emphasized that Cohort 18 reflects the ongoing trend of startups choosing Abu Dhabi as their base. He noted that the companies involved are developing technologies with clear market applications and scalable potential. Hub71 aims to support these founders in securing commercial traction and capital to facilitate their growth into global markets.

Notable Startups in Cohort 18

Among the startups selected is EchoTwin AI, a US-based company that transforms municipal fleets into mobile sensing networks. This innovation allows municipalities to create real-time digital twins, aiding in the detection and resolution of infrastructure and compliance issues. EchoTwin AI has raised AED29.4 million in funding. Another notable participant is Duck, a Kenyan retail data access platform that consolidates sales and inventory systems, helping brands restock more efficiently. Duck has raised AED1.1 million to date.

In the Hub71+ Life Sciences category, UK-based Amilis has secured AED5.9 million to develop an AI-powered clinical decision support platform aimed at improving the diagnosis and management of complex reproductive health conditions.

In the Hub71+ Digital Assets segment, Wingbits from Sweden has raised AED34.5 million. This startup operates a global network of tracking stations that stream high-quality flight data, providing real-time air traffic visibility.

Additionally, the Hub71+ ClimateTech ecosystem includes Persium, a UK startup that has raised AED6.2 million to develop miniaturized air quality sensors and AI-powered digital twins for measuring and reducing air pollution.

Strengthening International Ties

Cohort 18 brings together startups from 12 countries, spanning from Pre-Seed to Series A stages. This diverse representation highlights Abu Dhabi’s ability to attract high-growth startups globally. Notably, Indian startups such as Uravu Labs, focused on water solutions, and Endimension Technology, an AI-first radiology platform, further illustrate the strengthening innovation corridor between the UAE and India, facilitated by the UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Three startups from Hong Kong—Pubrio, Craftt, and KPay—have also joined Cohort 18 after participating in Hub71’s Hong Kong Immersion Programme launched last year. This participation underscores the programme’s effectiveness in positioning Abu Dhabi as a global launchpad for startups. KPay, a fintech platform, has raised AED238.7 million and is set to expand its operations from Abu Dhabi, assisting businesses in managing payments and financial operations.

Support and Incentives for Startups

Hub71’s 12-month Access Programme offers selected startups up to AED250,000 in in-kind incentives and an additional AED250,000 in cash via a SAFE note. Participants will also receive tailored mentorship, investor introductions, regulatory support, and access to Hub71’s corporate and government partners. High-performing startups may qualify for further support, enabling them to scale from Abu Dhabi to international markets.

With the addition of Cohort 18, Hub71’s startup ecosystem has expanded to 525 companies, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s status as one of the fastest-growing innovation ecosystems in the MENA region.
