Huairou Great Wall Marathon: A Celebration of Culture and Community
The Huairou Great Wall Marathon recently took place, attracting over 17,000 runners from around the globe. This vibrant event, held from September 19 to 22, set new records in various categories and was organized in collaboration with the Zayed Charity Run.
A Diverse Range of Events
The marathon featured a variety of races catering to different participants. The flagship event was a ten-kilometer run, complemented by a unique robot run, a five-kilometer family run, and a special race for People of Determination on September 20. The full and half marathons were held on September 21, allowing runners of all levels to participate and enjoy the scenic backdrop of the Great Wall.
In addition to the races, the “Al Bait Al Emarati” cultural fair ran concurrently, offering attendees a rich program filled with cultural activities. This fair provided a unique opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in authentic Emirati traditions, showcasing the nation’s heritage.
Showcasing National Pride
Among the participants were over 100 Emirati runners, both men and women, who proudly represented their country alongside international competitors. Their presence highlighted the spirit of unity and national pride that the marathon embodies.
The event was officially launched by Lt. General (Ret.) Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee of the Zayed Charity Run. He was joined by H.E. Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the UAE Ambassador to China, along with other embassy officials and members of the organizing committee.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The marathon also welcomed several notable figures, including Liang Shuang, Mayor of Huairou; Peng Lixia, Director of the Standing Committee of the City People’s Congress; Liu Jiugang, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Huairou; and Shi Fenghua, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau. Their presence underscored the significance of the event in fostering international relations.
Cultural Exchange and Humanitarian Goals
After the race commenced, Lt. General (Ret.) Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi, along with Chinese officials, visited the Emirati Pavilion near the Great Wall. This pavilion showcased the rich cultural heritage of the UAE, featuring traditional crafts, cuisine, and architectural models. They also toured the Zayed Charity Run Pavilion, where Al Kaabi discussed the run’s origins and its humanitarian objectives. Since its inception, the initiative has contributed over $170 million to hospitals and medical research worldwide.
Al Kaabi emphasized that the Zayed Charity Run has evolved into a global model for humanitarian sports, with more than 630,000 participants from various nationalities. He attributed the event’s success to the unwavering support from the UAE leadership and national institutions.
Strengthening UAE-China Relations
In his remarks, Al Kaabi highlighted that the collaboration between China and the UAE transcends mere sporting events. It reflects a mutual appreciation for shared cultural heritage and lays the groundwork for a sustainable partnership built on respect, cultural exchange, and a common vision for the future.
Personal Achievements and Community Spirit
Emirati runner Ali Al Shamsi expressed his pride in completing the marathon while carrying the UAE flag alongside fellow runner Yaqoub Al Asmawi. Al Asmawi echoed this sentiment, stating that every participant in both the Zayed Charity Run and the Huairou Great Wall Marathon is a “winner.” He shared his joy in achieving a new personal best, illustrating the event’s emphasis on personal growth and community spirit.
