Exciting Action Unfolds at Dubai HSBC SVNS

New Zealand showcased a phenomenal performance at the HSBC Sevens World Series in Dubai, winning all three of their pool matches on the tournament’s opening day, leading them to a semi-final clash against Fiji. Alongside Australia’s women’s team, the All Blacks Sevens stood out as the only unbeaten teams during the first day of the men’s competition. Their victories came with relative ease against Pool B rivals: Great Britain, Spain, and Australia.

Pool A: France Fights Back to Secure Semi-Final Spot

In an electrifying start to Pool A, defending champions Fiji made a dramatic comeback against last season’s titleholders, Argentina. After trailing 12-0, they rallied to clinch a 24-19 victory, thanks in part to two tries from Viwa Naduvalo. Fiji continued their strong form in their second match, comfortably defeating South Africa 28-10 with contributions from Joseva Talacolo, Pilipo Bukayaro, Jeremaia Matana, and Apete Narogo.

The Blitzboks had earlier secured a narrow win against France in a tense match, coming out on top 15-12. Christie Grobbelaar scored a pivotal try early in the second half, allowing South Africa to fend off a late charge from the Olympic champions, despite Antoine Zeghdar finding the try line just before the final whistle.

Facing early pressure post-defeats, France needed a strong showing against Argentina in their second game. They wasted no time, with Jordan Sepho launching into a hat-trick just minutes after kickoff. The French team maintained their momentum, overwhelming Argentina with a blistering 59-7 win, thus relegating their opponents to the minor playoffs.

As the day progressed, three teams—Fiji, South Africa, and France—were in contention for the semi-finals. The showdown between France and Fiji, a repeat of last season’s gold medal match, was highly anticipated. France continued their dominance, securing a 24-19 win and sending Fiji into a surprising low-stakes match in their final pool game. Meanwhile, Argentina rebounded to earn a victory against South Africa, finishing their day on a high note with a 19-14 win.

Pool B: New Zealand’s Dominance in the Group Stage

New Zealand’s opening match against an inexperienced Great Britain squad provided an early test. The Kiwi team managed a 21-7 victory, but only after facing stiff competition. Sione Molia scored a crucial late try that helped secure the win. Australia also surprised fans by overcoming Spain in a tightly contested 14-7 match, setting a competitive tone for their own campaign.

The highlight of the day came when New Zealand faced Australia in a highly anticipated clash. The match looked to be a runaway for the All Blacks, as they led 21-0. However, Australia made a fierce comeback, closing the gap to 21-17 before Kele Lasaqa made a crucial defensive play in the final moments, preserving New Zealand’s winning streak.

Australia’s fortunes fluctuated, as they suffered another defeat in their second outing, falling to Great Britain 14-10. Great Britain’s Rory McHaffie and Matt Davidson ignited their offense, leading to an impressive early lead. Despite efforts to recover, Australia couldn’t reclaim the game.

Through sheer resilience, Great Britain’s captain Damian Hoyland celebrated their earlier win, emphasizing the importance of the team’s hard work. “To see our efforts pay off is incredibly rewarding,” he remarked, following their win over Spain.

In their final match of the day, New Zealand concluded the group stage undefeated, coasting to a 24-7 win over Spain. This secured their top position in Pool B. The final match of the day was a thrilling encounter where Australia faced Great Britain in a must-win situation. Eventually, Australia triumphed with a score of 26-17, solidifying their place in the semi-finals.
