LG’s ‘Make Life Good’ Transforms Orphanage Kitchen and Soccer Facilities in 24-Hour Makeovers

In a significant initiative aimed at community upliftment, LG Electronics South Africa has partnered with notable figures to enhance facilities in Johannesburg. The project, part of the reality series “Make Life Good,” showcases transformations at Kensington Secondary School and LIV Lanseria, an orphanage, demonstrating the impact of corporate social responsibility.

Kensington Secondary School: A New Era for Young Athletes

For years, the soccer program at Kensington Secondary School faced challenges due to inadequate facilities. The coach and teachers took it upon themselves to manage the team’s laundry, often bringing home kits to ensure players had clean uniforms. The changing room was stark, featuring only a single toilet and a broken mirror, which hindered the athletes’ experience despite their evident talent and dedication.

Williams Okpara, a former goalkeeper for Orlando Pirates and the club’s record holder for appearances, spearheaded the renovation at Kensington. His episode premiered on June 11, 2023, on Mzansi Magic, part of a six-part series hosted by Jessica Nkosi. The show emphasizes community-driven change, with no competitive elements, focusing instead on the positive impact of the Achievers.

LIV Lanseria: A Kitchen for Hope

In Lanseria, the LIV Lanseria children’s home, which provides a safe haven for infants and young children, received a vital upgrade. Saray Khumalo, the first Black African woman to summit Mount Everest, led the transformation of a cramped kitchen equipped only with a two-plate stove. The renovation introduced a fully functional kitchen, including a 900-liter fridge, a dishwasher, and a microwave, significantly improving meal preparation and storage capabilities.

The enhancements not only streamline operations but also restore dignity to caregivers, allowing them to focus on nurturing the children rather than being bogged down by inefficient facilities. The guiding principle of the project is to address specific operational challenges faced by each organization, ensuring that the solutions provided are tailored and effective.

Empowering Communities Through Technology

The initiative also extended to a skills program for unemployed men, where outdated technology was replaced with modern solutions. A small projector was upgraded to a 100-inch smart display, facilitating better learning experiences. An energy-efficient air conditioner was installed to maintain a comfortable environment for training sessions, addressing the challenges posed by inconsistent service delivery in the region.

Pennileigh Naidu, Head of Corporate Marketing and PR at LG Electronics South Africa, emphasized the importance of demonstrating the brand’s commitment to social impact. The series aims to showcase tangible benefits rather than merely discussing them, focusing on the operational problems organizations face daily and providing technology that alleviates those issues.

A Shift in Corporate Social Responsibility

The “Make Life Good” series represents a shift in how corporate social responsibility is approached. Traditionally, such initiatives have been seen as peripheral to business operations, often involving simple donations or photo opportunities. This project integrates social impact directly into the brand’s identity, raising questions about the sustainability and ongoing utility of the facilities and equipment provided.

Naidu described this approach as “shared value,” where commercial interests align with social relevance, ensuring that both sectors benefit from the investment. The series has also reached audiences in Kenya and Nigeria, contributing to LG’s broader regional storytelling efforts.

Lasting Impact on Communities

As the crews conclude their work, the Achievers are set to continue their efforts in other communities. The improvements at LIV Lanseria and Kensington Secondary School will have lasting effects, providing clean kits for athletes and efficient kitchens for caregivers. These changes may not capture headlines, but they represent significant strides toward improving daily life for those involved.
