The Journey of Safder Nazir: A Father, an Author, and a Champion for Inclusion

A Dream Turned Reality

In 2023, Safder Nazir embarked on an unexpected journey—one that began on what seemed like an ordinary weekend. While sitting at his desk, he penned the first words of The Adventures of Layla, a children’s book inspired by his youngest daughter, Layla. With a joyful spirit that radiates warmth, Layla, who was born with Down’s Syndrome, has not only influenced the pages of this book but has become the essence of her family’s narrative.

Nazir, 53, explains, “I wrote it for her — and for children like her.” Having lived in Dubai since 2003, he sees Layla as a precious gift, wanting the world to understand and appreciate her unique, beautiful spirit.

Celebrating Life’s Moments

The Adventures of Layla is not merely a tale about disability; instead, it celebrates curiosity and courage through Layla’s eyes. The first story, Layla at the Beach, recounts a familiar family outing filled with humor and genuine moments, like packing her backpack and finding a handicap-friendly parking space. The sequel, Layla and the Party, captures a tender moment when Layla loses her helium balloon and innocently wonders, “Why can’t Daddy get it back when he can do everything?”

“These are the moments that stay with you,” Nazir reflects. “They’re funny, profound, and entirely her.”

While many recognize Nazir as a senior vice president in a global tech firm, few realize he’s also crafting heartfelt stories that champion themes of inclusion, resilience, and diversity—all while celebrating Layla as the star.

A Father’s Reflection

Father’s Day holds deep significance for Nazir, acting as a time for introspection about his journey in fatherhood that began in Manchester, England. The father of five, he moved to Dubai with his wife Carla to build a life rooted in love and values. Their family includes daughters Raihaanah, Sumayyah, Ameerah, Safiyyah, and the youngest, Layla.

Nazir recalls the shock of discovering that he and Carla were expecting again in their mid-forties. “We thought we were done,” he chuckles, but he believes Layla was destined to be part of their family.

When prenatal tests suggested potential challenges, including Down’s Syndrome, the option of termination arose. For Nazir, that was never a possibility. He affirms, “That was never an option.” Thus began Layla’s journey—a journey that would reframe not only their family dynamics but also his very essence.

Embracing Challenges

From the start, Layla challenged conventional expectations. Although she faced early health concerns and developmental delays, she has defied many odds with her indomitable spirit. “She might not be the fastest runner in school,” Nazir notes, “but she’s strong in spirit, and she loves physical activity. She has changed all of us.”

Her influence extends beyond her immediate family. Nazir’s eldest daughter, inspired by Layla’s experiences and struggles, pursued a career in speech and language therapy to make a difference for others. Each of Nazir’s daughters has chosen paths in fields that resonate with their family values of service and community.

Building Legacy

Nazir is dedicated to leaving a meaningful legacy for his daughters. Beyond teaching them practical skills, he also fosters independence and resilience. “He is their only male role model and is determined to be the best one possible,” Carla notes.

The Nazirs have cultivated a household filled with small rituals that carry significant weight. One light-hearted challenge he faced was how to greet each daughter upon returning home from work. His solution? Lining them up from youngest to eldest, ensuring no one felt overlooked.

The Heartbeat of the Family

Despite the complexities of raising a child with special needs, Nazir radiates a sense of calm and assurance. “I never worried too much,” he shares. His belief that every child comes with their own destiny guides his parenting style. For Nazir, raising his daughters with love and respect is paramount, and it’s clear that Layla is the heartbeat of their family.

“Her laughter fills our home,” he affirms, noting their shared love for running together in their neighborhood. “On sports day, my whispers of encouragement became part of her routine: just one more lamppost.”

Remaining Close-Knit

Managing the lives of five daughters across various life stages has its challenges, but it’s also filled with rich experiences. With three daughters now living abroad, the family remains tightly knit, with frequent visits and dedicated time for Layla. In their home, Layla is engaged and celebrated for who she is, treated equally with her sisters in all aspects of life.

Crafting a Digital Archive

Beyond his literary endeavors, Nazir is also curating a digital archive of Layla’s journey—short videos and reflections intended to showcase her growth and remind her of the limitless possibilities ahead. “It’s for her to look back on, to see how far she’s come,” he explains, reinforcing his unwavering belief in her potential.

Nazir’s devotion to his daughters is palpable. “I dote on all my daughters,” he shares, “but Layla… she’s different. She’s taught me patience, perspective, and joy in the simplest of moments.” Through writing, parenting, and cherishing life’s little things, Safder Nazir stands as an inspiring figure—a father not only navigating the journey of parenthood but also creating a legacy of love and inclusion for all children.
