Strengthening Economic Ties: A Look into New Jersey’s Mission to Dubai

The bustling metropolis of Dubai recently played host to Governor Phil Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy, and a delegation from New Jersey as they concluded a significant seven-day economic mission. This initiative, spearheaded by Choose New Jersey, focused on enhancing collaborations in various sectors, including logistics, manufacturing, fintech, and women’s entrepreneurship.

Hotpack Global’s $100 Million Investment

One of the noteworthy highlights of the trip was the announcement from Hotpack Global, a leading manufacturer and distributor of sustainable packaging solutions. During a meeting with Governor Murphy and New Jersey officials, Hotpack revealed plans to invest $100 million in a state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution facility in Edison, New Jersey. Spanning 70,000 square feet, this facility is expected to create up to 200 jobs over the next five years. Notably, this investment builds upon Hotpack’s initial presence in New Jersey through a warehouse at Raritan Center, Edison, which opened last September.

Fostering Partnerships with the U.S.–U.A.E. Business Council

The mission also included a reception with the U.S.–U.A.E. Business Council, where Governor Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy, and other delegation members engaged in discussions aimed at facilitating the expansion of UAE businesses into New Jersey. These conversations highlighted New Jersey’s strategic advantages, including its dynamic innovation ecosystem and direct access to the lucrative North American market.

Academic Collaboration: Rowan University and AURAK

Education was a critical focal point during the trip, exemplified by Governor Murphy signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dr. David A. Schmidt, President of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK). The MOU aims to foster collaboration between Rowan University and AURAK, focusing on joint research initiatives and academic cooperation. AURAK, known for its American-style education, has established relationships with several other U.S. universities, showcasing its commitment to global educational partnerships.

Exploring Diplomatic Opportunities with His Excellency Abdulla Lootah

Another significant meeting occurred with His Excellency Abdulla Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange. This private dialogue allowed Governor Murphy and his delegation to explore areas of mutual interest between New Jersey and the UAE, paving the way for future collaborations.

Expanding Academic Horizons: Kean University’s MOUs

In a meeting with Professor Mohamed-Vall M. Salem Zein, President of the University of Wollongong in Dubai, Governor Murphy announced additional MOUs between Kean University and three prominent universities in Dubai: American University of Dubai, University of Dubai, and the University of Wollongong in Dubai. These agreements aim to enhance research partnerships and foster innovation initiatives that will benefit both New Jersey and the UAE’s academic communities.

Engaging with the Indian Business Community

The economic mission also included a roundtable discussion with the Indian Business & Professional Council (IBPC) in Dubai. This meeting showcased New Jersey’s competitive advantages and its growing ties with India. The IBPC plays a vital role in supporting Indian-origin businesses in the region—many of which are looking to expand globally. The conversation centered around strengthening bilateral trade and investment opportunities, with notable emphasis on the efforts of the New Jersey India Center.
