GITEX’s Expansion into Europe and Asia Enhances Dubai’s Geoeconomic Position, According to Event Leader

Date:

Dubai’s flagship technology exhibition, GITEX, is on an ambitious trajectory of global expansion, aiming to transform the UAE into a strategic nexus for diverse technology ecosystems. Trixie LohMirmand, the CEO of Kaoun International and Executive Vice President of the Dubai World Trade Centre, recently shed light on this vision in an interview with Arabian Business, especially during the inaugural GITEX Europe in Berlin.

According to LohMirmand, this geo-economic positioning is not just about enhancing trade; it’s about asserting the UAE’s influence globally. “GITEX can definitely do a lot to position Dubai and the UAE at that intersection,” she stated, emphasizing that the event serves a purpose far beyond the traditional confines of trade shows. This expansion is a testament to Dubai’s ambitions to influence global technology landscapes positively.

What started in 1981 as a modest trade exhibition has blossomed into one of the world’s largest technology gatherings. The Dubai edition of GITEX attracted an impressive 200,000 attendees from over 180 countries in 2024, showcasing the offerings of 6,500 exhibiting companies. This rapid growth has led to the establishment of international editions of GITEX in various locations, including Morocco, Singapore, Nigeria, and now Germany.

The decision to launch GITEX Europe specifically in Berlin stems from the city’s strength in deep tech and scientific research. LohMirmand pointed out, “When it comes to innovation and especially deep tech, AI, Europe leads in its own capacity.” The potential to develop frontier technologies that address pressing global challenges is paramount, and Berlin’s reputation makes it an ideal location for such endeavors. Her remarks underline the importance of leveraging advanced research in the innovation process.

The Berlin launch was not a hasty decision; it followed two years of discussions with the German state government. LohMirmand noted the keen interest from German officials, who recognized GITEX’s evolution into a significant global ecosystem builder. This long-term engagement reflects a strategic collaboration that benefits both Dubai and Berlin.

Berlin’s multicultural environment, akin to that of Dubai, adds to its appeal as a venue for GITEX Europe. LohMirmand emphasized its role as Germany’s capital, where policy-making influences can positively impact tech regulations. She highlighted the potential for “co-creating regulations” and fostering an environment conducive to innovation, making Berlin strategically vital for GITEX’s expansion.

Furthermore, LohMirmand positioned the expansion of GITEX as a mirror of broader UAE ambitions, particularly when aligned with the country’s AI strategy. This strategy involves forming multiple international agreements, aimed at positioning the UAE at the forefront of artificial intelligence. “GITEX mirrors what the UAE ventures in AI,” she said, pointing out the event’s role in connecting established nations with emerging economies across the globe.

In a world where AI is evolving at an unprecedented pace, LohMirmand stressed the necessity of being interconnected with diverse global ecosystems. GITEX’s international editions are not merely events; they are catalysts for expanding and enriching these networks, facilitating meaningful dialogues and collaborations. “You can’t not be connected with the global – and very disparate – ecosystem,” she proclaimed, underlining the urgency of fostering global ties.

Set to run from May 21-23 at Messe Berlin, GITEX Europe marks a significant milestone as the first European edition of this renowned Dubai-born technology exhibition. This expansion into international markets demonstrates the event’s commitment to nurturing a global tech landscape.
