BBC Eye recently uncovered a disturbing case involving Charles “Abbey” Mwesigwa, a man allegedly at the center of a human trafficking ring exploiting vulnerable women in affluent areas of Dubai. Mwesigwa, previously known as a bus driver in London, was captured on video speaking to a BBC undercover reporter, offering women for sexual exploitation at prices starting from $1,000.
According to the investigation, Mwesigwa claimed his network could provide women who would perform almost any act requested by clients. Despite his denials, insisting he only helped women find accommodation and attended social events with wealthy people in Dubai, the evidence gathered suggests involvement in coercive and exploitative practices.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have detained Mwesigwa in Dubai’s Al Awir jail. The Dubai Public Prosecution confirmed his arrest but has not disclosed specific charges against him. Mwesigwa was also subjected to an Interpol Red Notice issued by Uganda, signaling his international wanted status.
The BBC’s inquiry revealed testimony from young Ugandan women who traveled to Dubai expecting legitimate jobs but instead found themselves burdened with debt and forced into prostitution—a practice illegal in Dubai. At least two women linked to Mwesigwa, Monic Karungi and Kayla Birungi, tragically died after falling from high-rise buildings. Initially, their deaths were reported as suicides, but family and friends have expressed doubts, calling for deeper investigations.
Despite repeated attempts, the Dubai police have not responded to requests for information regarding these cases. In Uganda, the recent parliamentary sessions saw heightened discussions about the trafficking scandal, with ministers expressing sorrow and pledging collaboration with Interpol to ensure accountability and justice.
The BBC continues to seek further information and encourages anyone with knowledge related to these investigations to reach out. Resources are also provided for those affected by gender-based violence or exploitation, aiming to offer support and assistance.
This case highlights the dark underbelly of human trafficking that exploits the hopes of vulnerable individuals, underscoring the urgent need for international cooperation and stringent law enforcement to combat such crimes.
