GCC and EU Ministers Urge Immediate Halt to Iranian Attacks

Foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union have denounced Iranian assaults targeting GCC nations, labeling these actions as direct threats to both regional and global stability. This condemnation follows an extraordinary virtual meeting where recent escalations of violence in the Middle East were addressed, prompting a call for Iran to cease its aggressive actions immediately.

Collective Defense and Security Measures

In their joint statement, the ministers emphasized that the member states of the GCC have the inherent right to defend themselves, both individually and collectively, as outlined under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. They also underscored the necessity for GCC nations to employ all requisite measures to protect their territories, citizens, and residents from these unprovoked attacks.

The meeting was chaired by Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani, the Foreign Minister of Bahrain and the current head of the GCC Ministerial Council, alongside Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, the Secretary-General of the GCC. On the European side, the delegation was led by Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who is also a Vice-President of the European Commission.

Civilian Infrastructure Under Attack

Ministers expressed grave concerns regarding the damage inflicted by the Iranian attacks, which have targeted critical civilian infrastructure throughout GCC countries. These assaults have included strikes on oil facilities, service installations, and residential areas, creating a perilous situation for civilian safety and wellbeing.

To address these challenges, both parties agreed to bolster diplomatic negotiations to devise a long-term solution aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities, while also seeking to halt the development and proliferation of ballistic missiles and drones that pose a threat to both regional and international security.

Reinforced Strategic Partnership

The significance of the strategic partnership between the European Union and the GCC was reiterated, which was initially established under the 1988 Cooperation Agreement. This partnership was further strengthened during the Brussels Summit in October 2024, highlighting the continuous collaboration between the two entities in addressing security concerns.

The EU reiterated its commitment to supporting GCC states, commending ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the region. Additionally, the constructive role played by Oman in facilitating dialogue and diplomacy was acknowledged by the ministers.

Maritime Security and Global Supply Chains

Importance was placed on safeguarding key maritime routes and regional airspace, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab, which are vital for maintaining global supply chains and energy markets. The ministers noted that the security of the Gulf region is intrinsically linked to global economic stability and international safety.

The European Union highlighted the contributions of EU naval missions, including Operation Aspides and Operation Atalanta, which are designed to protect vital shipping lanes. The European delegation also thanked the GCC states for their cooperation in assisting EU citizens located in the region, reaffirming a commitment to ensuring safe departures when necessary.

The collaborative stance between the GCC and the EU underscores a unified effort to address the escalating tensions in the region, emphasizing the shared objectives of maintaining security, stability, and economic integrity.
