Gaza Faces Fuel Shortage as Israel Closes Borders Amid Iran Conflict

Gaza is facing an impending fuel crisis as Israeli authorities halt the entry of fuel and essential goods into the region, citing ongoing military engagements with Iran. The border closures, initiated over the weekend, have escalated concerns about the humanitarian situation, as local officials warn that supplies are dwindling.

Israeli Military Actions Prompt Border Closures

Israel’s military closure of all crossings into Gaza followed the announcement of air strikes conducted in coordination with the United States. Israeli authorities indicated that the crossings would remain closed for an unspecified duration due to safety concerns during the ongoing conflict.

Limited Supplies and Humanitarian Impact

The Gaza Strip relies heavily on fuel transported from Israel and Egypt, and local officials express alarm over potential shortages. Hospital operations, along with water and sanitation services, are at significant risk if fuel supplies continue to deplete. Since the commencement of Israel’s prolonged military engagement with Hamas approximately two years ago, a majority of the Palestinian population in Gaza has been displaced.

Karuna Herrmann, a United Nations official overseeing fuel distribution in Gaza, indicated that current supplies could last “maybe a couple of days.” Similarly, Amjad Al-Shawa, a Palestinian aid leader collaborating with the UN and various NGOs, estimated that remaining fuel stocks could provide for just three to four days. He also noted that staple food items like vegetables and flour are poised to run low if the border closures persist. However, Reuters has not independently verified these assessments.

COGAT Responds to Supply Concerns

Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) agency, responsible for managing access to Gaza, asserted that adequate food supplies have arrived in the enclave since the beginning of a truce in October, which is part of a broader initiative backed by the United States to end the conflict. COGAT claimed that existing food stock is anticipated to last for an extended period, although it provided no insights into potential fuel shortages.

Rising Fears of Humanitarian Crisis

The closure of border crossings has intensified fears among residents about a resurgence of famine conditions, reminiscent of last year when extensive aid blockades created severe food scarcity in parts of Gaza. Hamada Abu Laila, a displaced resident, noted that the current situation mirrors those desperate times, instilling additional apprehension within the community.

As the humanitarian landscape in Gaza deteriorates due to the military actions and subsequent border measures, efforts from international entities to negotiate access for essential supplies remain urgent. The ramifications of ongoing conflicts in the region continue to amplify the challenges faced by the local population.
