IndiGo Disruptions Shift International Travel from Kolkata

A Week of Chaos for Domestic Travel

Recent disruptions in IndiGo’s domestic flight operations have significantly altered the travel plans of international passengers departing from Kolkata. In the past week, numerous flight cancellations and abrupt rescheduling left many travelers stranded. This uncertainty primarily affected those heading to popular destinations like Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia. As a result, many passengers are now opting to bypass traditional Indian hubs for international travel, instead choosing to connect through foreign cities.

Changing Transit Choices for Passengers

Traditionally, travelers flying from India to destinations such as the UK or the US would connect through major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru. However, the recent challenges have prompted a notable shift in behavior. Many are now seeking the earliest reliable international flights available, even if it means longer routes through cities like Dubai, Doha, or Singapore. This change has led to a surge in demand for airlines from the Gulf region and Southeast Asia, turning them into unexpected winners amidst the current turmoil.

Passengers Adjusting Their Itineraries

Archi Bagchi and Nilakshi Kotnis, who were en route to London, experienced firsthand the disruptions caused by IndiGo’s cancellations. Initially booked on a Kolkata-Bengaluru IndiGo flight to connect with Air India for their long-haul flight, they found themselves scrambling for alternatives. Faced with ongoing uncertainty, they opted for an Emirates flight via Dubai instead. Bagchi succinctly summarized their experience: “We realized there was no point in traveling within the country to take an international flight now.”

Alternative Routes Gaining Popularity

Another traveler, originally bound for Singapore with a stop in Delhi, found himself grappling with a cancelled Kolkata-Delhi flight. To avoid further disruptions, he decided to fly to Bangkok and connect to Singapore from there. This choice demonstrates the growing trend of passengers reconsidering their travel routes to secure reliable connections. Travel agents in Kolkata noted a significant spike in demand for international departures from the city since disruptions began, indicating a widespread shift in travel patterns.

Gulf and Southeast Asian Carriers Benefit

The impact of these disruptions has been particularly beneficial for Gulf carriers like Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways, along with Southeast Asian airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways. Debjit Dutta, the state president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators, observed that while Dubai was always a desirable destination, there is now an even greater demand for flights through this route.

New Preferred Routes for Travelers

For those traveling to destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea, routing through Southeast Asian cities like Singapore or Bangkok has become an increasingly preferred option. As travelers adapt to the shifting landscape, airline choices and routes are evolving in response to immediate needs.

Conclusion

The ongoing disruptions in IndiGo’s operations are reshaping how international travelers from Kolkata approach their journeys. By prioritizing reliability and exploring alternative routes, passengers are redefining their travel experiences in a rapidly changing environment.
