Dubai’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future: Insights from WGES 2025

At the upcoming World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2025, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will play a pivotal role in showcasing Dubai’s leadership in sustainability. This event aims to foster global dialogue on sustainable practices across technology, policy, and finance.

Themes of WGES 2025

The summit will revolve around the theme “Innovating for Impact: Accelerating the Future of the Green Economy.” This theme is supported by seven key pillars: technology and innovation, clean and renewable energy technologies, policy and regulation, finance, climate equity, climate adaptation and resilience, and youth involvement in climate action. Building on the foundations laid by previous summits and sustainability forums in the UAE, WGES 2025 will focus on advancing strategies for mitigation, adaptation, green finance, and innovation.

A significant aspect of the summit will be the emphasis on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies, along with advancements in energy storage and carbon markets, will be discussed to create actionable roadmaps for a swift and equitable transition to a green economy.

Showcasing Dubai’s Sustainability Initiatives

During WGES 2025, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), DEWA, and the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO) will collectively highlight Dubai’s commitment to sustainability. They will present flagship projects like the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and the Green Hydrogen project, which exemplify the city’s strides in renewable energy.

These organizations will also align their initiatives with national goals, such as the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the Net Zero 2050 initiative. By showcasing these efforts, they aim to demonstrate how local actions contribute to broader national targets. The summit will also serve as a platform for fostering global partnerships, promoting knowledge exchange, and engaging youth through various capacity-building initiatives. This integrated approach is designed to serve as a model for advancing the UAE’s green economy agenda.

Future Plans for Clean Energy Expansion

Dubai is committed to expanding its clean energy portfolio as part of its Net Zero Carbon 2050 initiative. DEWA is at the forefront of this expansion, particularly through the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which currently boasts a capacity of 3,860 MW. A recent milestone is the addition of a 2,000 MW seventh phase, which includes a 1,400 MW battery storage system.

Currently, DEWA’s installed generation capacity stands at 17.979 GW, with ambitious plans to reach 23 GW by 2030. By that time, clean energy is expected to make up 36.1% of the energy mix, surpassing the previous target of 25%. Additionally, significant investments are being made in water infrastructure, with plans to increase desalinated water production capacity to 735 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) by 2030, utilizing energy-efficient reverse-osmosis technology for 308 MIGD of that capacity.

Shifting the Conversation on the Green Economy

WGES 2025 is poised to transform the global dialogue surrounding the green economy, moving from mere pledges to actionable strategies. DEWA anticipates that the summit will catalyze this shift by emphasizing the importance of clean technologies, policy alignment, and financial mechanisms, while also prioritizing equity and resilience.

By bringing together stakeholders from government, the private sector, academia, and civil society, DEWA aims to strike a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability. Discussions will delve into the role of AI in enhancing energy efficiency, the future landscape of clean energy, the evolution of carbon markets, and financing mechanisms that support youth-driven solutions.

As the summit approaches, DEWA remains focused on advancing projects and partnerships that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. This commitment underscores Dubai’s leadership in the green economy and its dedication to a sustainable future.
