Emirati Fencers Shine at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament

The Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament, currently in its 13th edition, has kicked off with remarkable success for Emirati fencers, who secured a total of three medals: one gold, one silver, and one bronze. This impressive start underscores the tournament’s significance in the UAE’s sporting calendar, particularly within the realm of fencing.

A Premier Event Sponsored by Dubai’s Leadership

Hosted by the Dubai Sports Council (DSC), the tournament takes place at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex. This year’s theme, “Limitless Capabilities,” resonates with the spirit of the athletes competing. The event enjoys royal patronage from Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister, as well as direction from Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the DSC.

Women’s Epee Triumphs

Among the standout performances was Zainab Al Husseini, who showcased her skills by winning gold in the women’s epee. She delivered a thrilling final against Tunisia’s Sarah Besbes, finishing with a score of 15-11. Additionally, UAE fencer Rawda Al Aleeli contributed to the medal tally by claiming bronze after achieving a 15-11 victory over Lamar Al Nahla in the playoff for third place.

Men’s Epee Results

The men’s epee competition also highlighted the talent present at the tournament. Mohammed Al Mazmi earned silver after a challenging bout against Iran’s Mohammad Rezaei Tadi, ending with a score of 15-6 against him. The bronze medal in this category was awarded to Hassan Al Foudry, who triumphed over Alex Manrique with a score of 13-9.

Rising Stars and Organizational Excellence

Several other Emirati fencers made strong showings, including Saleh Al Balushi, who placed fifth. Imran Al Balushi and Khalifa Al Zarouni also performed well, making it into the top eight of the tournament. The medal ceremony, which highlighted this success, was attended by significant figures, including Sheikh Salem Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the President of the Asian and UAE Fencing Federations.

Sheikh Salem praised the tournament’s organizational and technical standards, describing it as a critical milestone for UAE fencers aiming for success on international stages. He noted that events like this not only place athletes in high-pressure environments but also refine their skills through invaluable competitive experiences.

Developing Future Talent

The focus moving forward will be on expanding participation and enhancing the quality of both physical and technical training. The tournament serves as an ideal platform for discovering new talent to fortify the national teams. Sheikh Salem emphasized the importance of sustaining performances that elevate the prominence of fencing within the region.

Upcoming Competitions

As excitement builds from the fencing events, the Nad Al Sheba tournament’s schedule is packed with a variety of competitions. The International Padel Federation (FIP) tournament is set to conclude, with various winners to be crowned soon. Following this, the Nad Al Sheba International Padel Championship for national teams is scheduled to begin, featuring both Arab and international teams, and will run until February 27.

In addition to padel, other competitions such as cycling races and badminton matches are also taking place. The Obstacle Course Race is scheduled for February 24, while jiu-jitsu events will be held on February 24 and 25. Road running will follow on February 27, contributing to the event’s diverse sports offerings.

The 3×3 basketball tournament and Wheelchair Basketball competitions move into their decisive rounds next month, with the finals set to take place at the main hall of the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex. The traditional Tug-of-War preliminary rounds will begin on March 1, leading up to the finals on March 6. Meanwhile, volleyball teams from prominent international clubs will compete from February 26, culminating in finals on March 7.
