Hyderabad’s New Sports Initiatives Gain Momentum
Major Investments in Sports Infrastructure
In a significant development for sports enthusiasts in Telangana, Sports Minister Vakiti Srihari announced the establishment of a new satellite Sports City, driven by a collaborative effort between GMR and Dubai Sports City. This ambitious project is expected to cost approximately ₹1,000 crores, setting the stage for an expansive hub of physical activity and competition.
In addition to the Sports City, India Xtreme Adventure Pvt. Ltd has committed to investing ₹500 crores to develop adventure sports facilities, enriching the state’s offerings for thrill-seekers. Furthermore, Supercross India Pvt. Ltd is set to create a motor racing arena with an investment of ₹75 crores, broadening the spectrum of sports covered in this initiative. These announcements were made during the Telangana Rising Global Summit held at Future City, with the Telangana government entering into memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with these companies.
A Strengthened Commitment to Sports
During the summit, Minister Srihari took part in a panel discussion featuring prominent figures like former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin and renowned athletes such as PV Sindhu and Anil Kumble. The minister emphasized the importance of nurturing talent, stating that athletes should regard their sport with reverence, akin to a ‘God’. He also highlighted the Telangana government’s comprehensive sports policy aimed at elevating the state’s profile in the sports arena.
Insights from Leading Athletes
In her remarks, PV Sindhu stressed the significance of various factors that contribute to the success of athletes. She pointed out that adequate infrastructure and skilled coaching play vital roles in an athlete’s journey. Support and encouragement at every stage are essential for fostering talent and helping athletes reach their full potential.
Azharuddin echoed these sentiments, noting that several athletes from Telangana, including Sania Mirza and Nikhath Zareen, have achieved international acclaim. He emphasized the role of Gopichand Academy in developing local talent, asserting that well-maintained playgrounds are critical for the advancement of sports in the region.
Financial Support for Athletes
Another point raised during the discussion was the need for robust financial support for athletes. Azharuddin highlighted that while the sports landscape in Telangana has seen improvements, particularly in coaching availability, there remains a pressing need to address the financial challenges many athletes face. He called on the government to implement measures that ensure athletes are free from financial stress, allowing them to focus solely on their performance.
Focus on Diverse Sports
The Telangana government is also making strides in promoting football alongside other sports. Athletes like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, and Gutta Jwala have brought considerable recognition to the state. With a well-rounded focus on various sports disciplines, the government is working to create an inclusive environment where athletes can excel.
In conclusion, the collaborative efforts between the Telangana government and private enterprises mark a promising new chapter in the state’s sports landscape. With substantial investments and a strong commitment to developing athletes, the future looks bright for sports in Hyderabad.
