Dubai has launched a new initiative to inspire a love of reading among children.

The ‘Zad Rashid’ programme, introduced by the Community Development Authority in partnership with Dubai Culture, will distribute 1,000 home libraries to young readers across the city. This initiative aims to enhance literacy and encourage a cultural dialogue among the youth.

Each library consists of 25 carefully curated books — with 80 percent authored by Emirati writers and 20 percent by Arab authors residing in the UAE. This selection not only highlights the rich literary talent within the region but also seeks to instill a sense of cultural pride and identity among young readers.

In a digital age where screen time often overshadows traditional reading, ‘Zad Rashid’ advocates for a more balanced approach. By providing children with tangible books, the programme promotes critical thinking skills and fosters a deeper connection to the Arabic language and national heritage. Families are also encouraged to engage actively with public libraries, reinforcing the importance of community resources in nurturing young intellects.

As part of the launch, 25 Emirati families were presented with these home libraries, recognizing their proactive participation in Dubai’s public library network. This gesture not only rewards their commitment to literacy but also serves as a model for other families to emulate.

To further strengthen this initiative, a panel discussion featuring Emirati authors, parents, and children will be organized to discuss the pivotal role of reading in cultivating an informed and engaged society. These discussions will pave the way for deeper conversations about education, literature, and the sharing of knowledge.

Officials emphasize that ‘Zad Rashid’ is more than just a reading programme; it embodies Dubai’s long-term vision to foster creativity, cultural appreciation, and sustainable social development. One book at a time, the initiative aims to enrich the lives of children and instill lifelong reading habits.
