Dubai Strengthens Position as Global Sports Economy Hub, Targeting AED 18.3 Billion Contribution by 2033

DUBAI – Dubai is solidifying its status as a premier global sports economy hub, driven by a strategic vision that has transformed sports into a key economic sector. This initiative aims to significantly enhance the emirate’s gross domestic product (GDP) contribution while aligning with sustainable development goals and boosting its attractiveness for investment, tourism, and business.

Economic Growth Through Sports

Recent achievements underscore Dubai’s success in utilizing sports as a catalyst for economic development. The emirate has attracted and hosted numerous international tournaments and events, developed state-of-the-art sports infrastructure, and created an integrated ecosystem that merges investment, tourism, technology, and sports media.

The Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033 outlines ambitious goals, aiming to increase the sports sector’s GDP contribution from AED 10.17 billion annually to AED 18.3 billion by 2033. This represents an approximate 80% increase from current figures. Additionally, the plan seeks to boost attendance at major sporting events from 1.67 million to over 4.1 million and increase the number of such events by up to 250% in the coming years.

The Role of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33

With the introduction of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, the sports sector has emerged as a vital pillar of the new economy. This growth is fueled by the rapid expansion of sports tourism, broadcasting rights, commercial sponsorships, sports content creation, and the digital economy associated with sports.

Dubai hosts over 400 local and international sporting events annually across various disciplines, alongside approximately 100 training camps for leading international clubs and national teams. This capability reflects the emirate’s strength in attracting major events and converting them into sustainable economic drivers that support hospitality, tourism, aviation, retail, and services sectors.

Signature Sporting Events

Among the notable events is the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which has consistently attracted top tennis stars and garnered extensive regional and international media coverage. This event has further solidified Dubai’s reputation as a global sports destination. Salah Tahlak, Tournament Director, noted that the tournament’s ongoing success highlights Dubai’s leadership in hosting major sporting events. He emphasized that these international tournaments serve as influential platforms for economic support, tourism, and global promotion of the emirate, enhancing its appeal for investment and sports partnerships.

The Dubai Marathon also retains its status as one of the world’s leading marathon races, drawing thousands of runners from diverse nationalities each year. This event directly benefits the hospitality, hotel, aviation, and retail sectors. Ahmed Al Kamali, General Coordinator of the Dubai Marathon, stated that sports are a crucial economic driver for the emirate, generating significant tourism, investment, and media returns. He highlighted the marathon as a successful example of the growing economic impact of major sporting events.

Expanding the Sports Portfolio

In recent years, Dubai has broadened its portfolio of international competitions to include golf tournaments, mixed martial arts tours, cricket events, and significant running, cycling, and marine sports events. This diversification aims to attract a wider audience and enhance economic returns.

The launch of the Dubai Basketball project and the team’s participation in the European ABA League represent strategic steps in reinforcing the emirate’s position as a regional and global hub for sports investment. Additionally, Dubai has positioned itself as a leading destination for esports, one of the fastest-growing sectors in sports, presenting substantial investment opportunities linked to the digital economy, content creation, and youth engagement.

Ahmed Al Khaja, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, remarked that events like the Dubai Esports and Games Festival illustrate the sector’s rapid growth and its increasing contribution to Dubai’s creative economy, appealing to participants and visitors of all ages and interests.

Infrastructure and Global Engagement

Dubai has become a favored location for winter training camps for leading clubs and national teams, benefiting from its advanced infrastructure and world-class sports and hospitality facilities. This trend generates both direct and indirect economic returns across sectors related to sports and tourism.

The emirate continues to enhance its intellectual and investment leadership by hosting the Dubai International Sports Conference. This event has become a global platform for decision-makers, experts, and sports stars to discuss the future of the sports industry, investment opportunities, innovation, and technology in sports.

Major sporting events also bolster Dubai’s global soft power through extensive international media coverage, showcasing its landmarks and sports venues across various broadcasting channels and digital platforms, reaching hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide.
