Dubai SME Launches Accelerator Program for Emirati Startups

A New Era for Emirati Entrepreneurship

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Dubai SME), a vital component of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), is taking significant strides to bolster local startups. In collaboration with global innovation pioneer Plug and Play, the establishment has unveiled a new accelerator program specifically designed for Emirati-owned ventures. This initiative aims to provide these businesses with the tools, knowledge, and networks necessary to thrive in both local and international markets.

Tailored Support for Startups

The accelerator program will host two cohorts each year, welcoming 10 Emirati startups per cycle. These participants will benefit from Plug and Play’s well-established methodologies, designed to fast-track their growth and market presence. By concentrating on tech-enabled businesses, the program promises customized mentorship, exposure to global markets, and streamlined access to various sectors.

Aligning with Dubai’s Economic Vision

The launch of this accelerator program underscores Dubai’s commitment to the Dubai Economic Agenda, known as D33. This ambitious initiative aims to double the size of the emirate’s economy within the next decade. Furthermore, it emphasizes Dubai’s vision of becoming the most attractive global hub for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and local champions.

Plug and Play will operate the accelerator as part of a series of activations and workshops at the newly inaugurated Dubai Founders HQ, an initiative created through a partnership between DET and the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy. Startups enrolled in the program will have full access to the resources available at the founders’ hub, located in the 25Hours Hotel at One Central, Dubai World Trade Centre.

Enhancing Collaboration Across Sectors

According to Ahmad Al Room Almheiri, the Acting CEO of Dubai SME, this initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to fostering economic development through youth entrepreneurship. He stated that empowering Emirati entrepreneurs is crucial for the future of Dubai’s economy. Through this partnership with Plug and Play, the program will not only assist individual startups but also lay the groundwork for sustainable, innovation-led growth. This effort highlights the collaborative spirit between government and the private sector, an essential characteristic of Dubai’s entrepreneurial landscape.

The program takes a multi-faceted approach by involving several key government and semi-government entities, including Dubai Health, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Police, Emirates Flight Catering, and the General Directorate for Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA). These organizations will work alongside startups to identify sector-specific challenges and collaborate on developing effective solutions.

A Vision for Innovation

Saeed Amidi, founder and CEO of Plug and Play Tech Center, expressed enthusiasm about this partnership with Dubai SME. Drawing inspiration from Silicon Valley, where major tech firms like Google and OpenAI thrive, he emphasized the potential for collaboration between Dubai and his organization. Amidi highlighted his excitement about contributing to the local entrepreneurship ecosystem by offering cutting-edge expertise to support local businesses.

The program aims to provide tailored mentorship, investment opportunities, and avenues for market expansion that will help Emirati startups grow both regionally and globally. Through direct engagement with local startups, key stakeholders will not only address sector challenges but also actively contribute to boosting the national economy and fostering homegrown innovation.

Conclusion

The launch of this accelerator program represents a significant advancement for Emirati startups, promising to equip them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed. By prioritizing collaboration, mentorship, and market access, Dubai is setting a new standard for supporting local entrepreneurs and positioning itself as a compelling destination for innovation and growth. As this initiative evolves, it will undeniably shape the future landscape of Emirati entrepreneurship.
