Victims Share Their Experiences

In a series of unsettling events, several residents have come forward to share their harrowing encounters with impostors posing as officials. One woman recounted how she initially believed her Google Meet call was related to academic matters. However, her confusion turned to shock when she noticed a man dressed in a military uniform on the screen, sternly demanding that she keep her camera on. The disturbing nature of this encounter left her and others deeply unsettled.

Another individual, Omar Mohammed, grew suspicious during his interaction when the person impersonating a figure of authority spoke English, but with an unusual accent that didn’t quite fit the context. This heightened his alertness and made him cautious about proceeding with the conversation. Similarly, university student Samira Abdel Fattah was confronted with claims that she owed fines. Fortunately, she quickly recognized the deception and avoided falling victim to the scammer’s attempt to extract money under false pretenses.

Police Confirm Reports, Warn Public

Dubai Police have officially acknowledged these reports and issued strong warnings to the public. Authorities urge residents not to respond to any calls, texts, or emails from individuals claiming to be police or government officials who request banking or personal financial information. The police emphasize the importance of skepticism and caution in such situations to prevent becoming victims of fraud.

To assist in tackling this issue, the police have advised that any suspicious contacts should be reported immediately. Residents can use the dedicated eCrime platform or visit their nearest local police station to report potential scams. This proactive approach aims to safeguard the community and fast-track investigations into fraudulent activities.

Authorities have also shared recent success in their efforts to curb these scams. They revealed that thirteen suspects, organized into three separate gangs, were recently arrested for orchestrating similar schemes. These groups impersonated officers or bank staff with the intent to steal sensitive data, including card security codes and one-time passwords. The arrests highlight the ongoing threat of such scams and the authorities’ commitment to protecting residents from financial fraud.
