Empowering Individuals with Down Syndrome: Dubai Police Initiates Para Taekwondo Program
As part of its ongoing commitment to empowering people of determination, Dubai Police has launched a transformative community sports initiative titled “Down Syndrome Rehabilitation through Para Taekwondo.” This program is designed to enhance the lives of individuals with Down syndrome, encouraging their participation in local, regional, and international sports competitions.
Empowerment through Sports
This initiative is a collaboration among the General Department of Training, the People of Determination Empowerment Council, the UAE Taekwondo Federation, and the Emirates Down Syndrome Association. The program focuses on enhancing participants’ physical and mental capabilities while boosting self-confidence and promoting active engagement in sports and community events.
The essence of para taekwondo lies in its ability to serve as a holistic rehabilitation tool, promoting independence and self-sufficiency among individuals. It aligns with the UAE’s broader vision of empowering these individuals and enhancing their quality of life, making them integral members of society.
Dubai Police’s Commitment to Inclusion
Brigadier Ahmed Mardas, Director of the General Department of Training, reaffirmed Dubai Police’s dedication to developing human resources across all sectors. "This sports initiative reflects our commitment to creating a comprehensive environment for rehabilitation and sports development," he stated. This initiative forms part of a larger mission to integrate individuals with determination into society in partnership with both public and private sectors.
Support from the Emirates Down Syndrome Association
Dr. Manal Jaroor, Chairperson of the Emirates Down Syndrome Association, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative. "Training individuals with Down syndrome in para taekwondo adds immense value to their sports experience," she said. The association highlights the notable successes its team has achieved on both local and international levels, underscoring the positive impact of focused athletic training.
Strategic Vision for Inclusion
Major Abdullah Al Shamsi, Chairperson of the People of Determination Empowerment Council at Dubai Police, discussed how this initiative aligns with the Year of Community. "This is part of our strategic plan to empower individuals with determination within Dubai Police and the outside community," he said. His emphasis on the importance of training and rehabilitation as fundamental rights showcases a clear commitment to providing an inclusive and empowering environment.
He further remarked on how para taekwondo, emphasizing discipline and strength, serves as an effective medium to illustrate the potential of individuals with Down syndrome. "We are committed to enabling them to compete confidently at all levels," he added.
Recognizing Achievements and Future Plans
Lieutenant Colonel Abdulaziz Al Shammari from the Sports Excellence Center, alongside other key figures from the UAE Taekwondo Federation and the People of Determination Empowerment Council, recently evaluated the achievements of the Emirates Down Syndrome Association. They noted the significant improvements the initiative has made in enhancing both the sports and social skills of participating students.
Expert Insights and Program Outlook
Expert Abdul Quddus Mohammed, a certified trainer and Director of the Games for People of Determination team, shared a comprehensive overview of the program. He highlighted how the initiative improves participants’ motor and neurological coordination, builds self-confidence, and fosters social inclusion. The program consists of various training stages, with plans in place to include female participants with Down syndrome in the next academic year.
This step indicates a forward-looking vision, aiming for a broader impact and further integration of individuals in sports, thereby enriching their lives and enhancing community awareness.
As Dubai Police continues to champion initiatives like “Down Syndrome Rehabilitation through Para Taekwondo,” it not only reinforces support for individuals with determination but also highlights the vital role of sports in facilitating personal growth and societal acceptance.
