Dubai Police Reinforces E-Scooter Safety Guidelines

E-Scooter Lane Usage Advisory

Dubai Police has recently issued an important safety advisory aimed at electric scooter riders across the emirate. The message stresses the necessity of using designated lanes and explicitly forbids the use of jogging and sports tracks for e-scooter travel. This initiative is part of their broader mission to improve overall road safety in Dubai.

Importance of Designated Routes

In a post shared on their social media channels, Dubai Police highlighted that running tracks are designed solely for jogging and exercise, not for electric scooters. The aim is to create a safe environment for everyone using the paths, whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, or e-scooter riders. “Using designated lanes ensures a safer, smoother experience for everyone,” the police stated, encouraging riders to adhere to the marked paths to mitigate risks and enhance safety.

Expanding Infrastructure for Safety

Dubai has made considerable strides in expanding its cycling and e-scooter infrastructure over the past few years. The city now boasts hundreds of kilometers of dedicated pathways, particularly in popular areas like Hatta, Dubai Marina, and Jumeirah. Despite these advancements, authorities have noticed that some riders are still misusing pedestrian walkways and jogging paths. In response, Dubai Police has intensified its awareness campaigns to combat this behavior.

Regulatory Requirements for E-Scooter Riders

To ensure the safe operation of e-scooters, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Dubai Police, has established several clear regulations that riders must follow:

Designated Paths Only

Riders are required to use tracks specifically marked for e-scooters or shared cycling lanes. This adherence not only safeguards the rider but also protects other vulnerable road users.

Sports Tracks Prohibited

Riding on jogging and running tracks is strictly prohibited for anyone on a motorized device. This rule is essential for maintaining the integrity of these spaces meant for athletes and casual joggers alike.

Permit Requirements

All e-scooter riders without a valid UAE driving license must apply for a complimentary e-scooter permit via the RTA’s official website, ensuring responsible and legal use of electric scooters.

Minimum Age and Safety Gear

A minimum age of 16 years is stipulated for riders. Also, wearing helmets is mandatory, while reflective vests are strongly recommended, especially for night-time riders to enhance visibility.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Authorities have issued strong warnings regarding violations of these regulations. Riding an e-scooter on prohibited paths may result in a fine of Dh200. More serious infractions, such as reckless riding or using an e-scooter in unauthorized areas, could lead to the confiscation of the device.

Promoting a Culture of Road Safety

Dubai Police emphasizes that this campaign aims to instill a sense of responsibility among e-scooter users and the wider community. Ensuring everyone plays their part in upholding road safety standards is crucial for creating a harmonious environment.

Reporting Unsafe Behavior

Residents are encouraged to report unsafe riding or any violations they observe. They can do so through the Police Eye feature on the Dubai Police mobile app or by calling the general non-emergency hotline at 901, making it easier for the community to contribute to safer roadways.

Through concerted efforts and ongoing education, Dubai aims to cultivate a safer atmosphere for all road users, ensuring that e-scooter riders can enjoy the city’s pathways responsibly.
