The UAE has always been a place of superlatives — from the fastest cars to the tallest buildings. Now, it adds yet another remarkable achievement to its urban landscape: the world’s highest metro station, part of the upcoming Blue Line network.
The vision for this ambitious project was laid down by none other than the Dubai Ruler, who has been a driving force behind the Metro’s evolution. The foundation stone for the first station, named Emaar Properties, was ceremonially placed, with operations set to commence on September 9, 2029 — a date significant in its choice of the iconic number nine.
The design of the station is nothing short of futuristic, featuring a portal-like structure that embodies a ‘gateway to the future,’ perfectly in line with Dubai’s ambitious vision. This architectural wonder aims to be more than just a transit point; it is designed to capture the imagination and enhance the city’s skyline.
Design Masterminds
Who is behind this stunning design? The answer lies with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the acclaimed American architectural firm renowned for their work on the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Their portfolio also includes the Olympic Tower in New York and the Sears Tower in Chicago, making them the perfect choice for this monumental project.
The station will rise to a height of 74 meters (approximately 242 feet) and will feature three distinct levels. Its architecture blends warm natural tones with modern materials, providing a striking visual experience. High ceilings with glass panels invite sunlight to illuminate both the platforms and lobby, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere.
The design incorporates innovative elements, making it appear as if the platform organically emerges from the station walls. A pedestrian bridge connects travelers directly to the metro line, enhancing accessibility. The combination of Jura limestone and bronze metal for wall panels, along with granite floor tiles, reflects a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity, emblematic of Dubai’s rich cultural tapestry.
The Blue Line’s design was initially unveiled in October 2024, featuring an impressive large oval-shaped structure arching over the tracks, a departure from the enclosed designs of the existing Red and Green Lines. This bold vision has transformed into the current design with towering vertical walls encompassing the platform while maintaining the essential metro terminal arch common to Dubai’s transport architecture.
More than just a transport hub, this station is being envisioned as a mini-community. It will include electric vehicle charging stations, designated drop-off areas, and ample parking spaces, all surrounded by lush greenery. Anticipated to facilitate around 160,000 passenger journeys daily by the year 2040, this station symbolizes not just a transit point but a step towards a futuristic, interconnected urban environment.
