Dubai Culture and Arts Authority: Bridging Emirati Talent with Japanese Artistry

The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has recently concluded the Japan Art & Culture Delegation Programme, an initiative that highlights its commitment to expanding opportunities for Emirati and UAE-based artists on the global stage. Supported by the Sikka Platform, this program is designed to foster international networking and cultural exchange through deep engagement with Japan’s esteemed art institutions and practitioners.

Empowering Creatives through Cultural Diplomacy

Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, the CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, emphasized the significance of cultural diplomacy in positioning Dubai as a global arts center. She noted that the UAE–Japan Creative Exchange plays a crucial role in promoting cooperation and intellectual collaboration among universities, galleries, and art institutions worldwide. Al Suwaidi remarked, “This programme opens up new prospects for creatives,” offering participants a chance to learn from diverse artistic practices and gain exposure to global trends.

A Diverse Delegation of Emirati Artists

The 10-day program brought together a distinguished group of Emirati creatives, including noted figures such as Sheikh Maktoum bin Marwan Al Maktoum, Kamla AlOlama, and Latifa Saeed. This diverse delegation also featured academics like Alanood Bukhammas and Asma Belhamar from Zayed University, along with established artists from the region. Guided by Yusaku Imamura from the Tokyo University of the Arts and other prominent mentors, participants were immersed in a rich cultural experience.

Cultural Immersion in Japan

The program included a visit to Expo 2025 Osaka, specifically focusing on the UAE Pavilion, which showcases the country’s advancements in space exploration and sustainable technologies. During their time in Japan, participants explored both historical landmarks and contemporary art venues, including the Mori Art Museum and several prominent galleries. Notable visits included discussions with influential architect Sou Fujimoto and interactions with leading artists like Yayoi Kusama.

Artistic Exploration and Professional Growth

The sheer variety of places the delegation visited allowed for a comprehensive understanding of Japan’s cultural scene. They explored creative spaces such as 21_21 Design Sight and engaged with Tokyo University’s architecture and design programs. Discussions with contemporary artists provided invaluable insight into their artistic processes, fostering a deeper connection between Japanese aesthetics and the participants’ own cultural narratives.

Voices from the Exchange

Participants were quick to express their reflections on the transformative experience. Sheikh Maktoum bin Marwan Al Maktoum described the program as a gateway to understanding Japan’s vast cultural landscape, enriching their dialogue between the two nations. Asma Belhamar echoed this sentiment, highlighting how the journey unveiled new perspectives that are crucial to the development of shared artistic visions and goals.

Designer Kamla AlOlama found that the experience sparked fresh ideas around artistic and architectural concepts. She pointed out that engaging with distinguished peers led to meaningful conversations that explored the latest trends in the art world.

Ahmad Makary remarked on the unique opportunity to connect with Japanese artists, which prompted him to consider the balance between contemporary aesthetics and heritage in his own work. This exchange served as a platform for investigating how regional and local identities can be incorporated into modern artistic frameworks.

A Transformative Journey for Knowledge Expansion

Curator Yara Ayoob conveyed how the initiative greatly expanded her knowledge and inspired her to rethink her artistic presentations. Each interaction enhanced her understanding of the interconnectedness of various art forms and practices.

Amna Al Zaabi found the entire experience to be transformative, bridging traditional Japanese simplicity with contemporary artistic expression. This newfound understanding enriched her interpretation of cultural narratives, demonstrating the depth and complexity of creative storytelling.

For artist Fatma Al Ali, visiting art studios and learning about Japanese creative methods added depth to her understanding of the art world. She appreciated the chance to engage directly with institutional leaders in Japan, creating invaluable learning moments.

The Lasting Impact of the Program

Designer Alanood Bukhammas emphasized the enduring impact of the program, highlighting the importance of design as a tool for communication across cultures. She noted that the initiative allowed for the establishment of sustainable networks, leading to high-quality ideas application in educational settings.

Finally, Latifa Saeed praised Dubai Culture’s commitment to cultivating an environment that encourages unique perspectives. She articulated how cultural programs like this one empower creatives to enhance their skills and broaden their horizons—fostering an atmosphere of growth and innovation.

The Japan Art & Culture Delegation Programme stands as a testament to Dubai Culture’s dedication to nurturing artistic talent and strengthening international ties, thereby ensuring the continued evolution and dynamism of the UAE’s creative landscape.
