The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority recently wrapped up the inaugural edition of its Emirati Chefs Grant programme, a remarkable initiative designed to elevate aspiring Emirati chefs in the culinary arts. This three-month programme, conducted in partnership with the International Centre for Culinary Arts (ICCA Dubai), aims to empower participants by honing their skills, cultivating their passion for the culinary field, and celebrating the rich traditions of Emirati hospitality.

Fostering Culinary Skills and Expertise

The Emirati Chefs Grant sought to provide participants with in-depth training through a series of specialized culinary modules. Six talented Emirati chefs, including Noora Al Awadhi, Alia Al Ali, Asayel Al Marzouqi, Rashid Al Nuaimi, Huda Al Ghafli, and Mitha Al Ghafli, earned diplomas in culinary arts. These chefs engaged in intensive workshops led by industry experts at ICCA Dubai.

Throughout the programme, they mastered both fundamental and advanced cooking techniques, gaining practical experience in preparing a diverse array of dishes—from appetizers and main courses to baked goods and desserts. Utilizing state-of-the-art kitchen equipment, participants also learned vital aspects of culinary arts, such as menu design, food presentation, and hospitality etiquette.

A Comprehensive Learning Experience

Beyond cooking techniques, the programme delved into essential areas such as food safety, public health, and cost management. Participants explored meticulous planning and preparation methods, as well as the operational and managerial facets crucial for running professional kitchens. This comprehensive approach ensured that graduates were well-equipped to excel in the competitive culinary landscape.

Second Edition on the Horizon

Following the success of the first edition, Dubai Culture has announced plans for a second round of the programme, set to commence in November 2025. This new cohort will feature ten Emirati women chefs, including Ayesha Khoory, Auhood Waleed Alzarooni, and Hamda Adil Abdulhamid Abdulla Alkhoori, among others, who will also work towards obtaining their diplomas in Culinary Arts.

A Commitment to Heritage and Innovation

Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design & Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, emphasized the significance of the Emirati Chefs Grant in nurturing culinary talent. “The programme offers a unique platform for Emirati chefs to develop their skills and explore their creativity while preparing dishes that blend local and global flavors,” she stated.

Al Suwaidi further noted that food embodies the essence of Emirati culture, allowing local talent to express the richness of its culinary heritage and community values. The original and innovative dishes created by participants serve as a testament to this vibrant identity.

Preserving Culinary Heritage

Sunjeh Raja, Director & CEO of ICCA Dubai, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the dual responsibility of being both homegrown in the UAE and showcasing its culinary heritage. “At ICCA, we take pride in training a new generation of Emirati chefs, helping them refine their skills while remaining grounded in their cultural identity,” he shared.
