Dhai Dubai: A Glimpse into the Vibrant World of Emirati Light Art
Dhai Dubai, the pioneering Emirati-led light art exhibition, is set to showcase its second edition at Al Wasl Plaza in Expo City Dubai from November 12 to 18. With its engaging theme, “Light Influences Life,” the event delves into the significant role light plays in shaping Emirati art, culture, and storytelling. This year, the exhibition proudly features seven new artists, each bringing unique perspectives on how light connects communities and inspires creativity.
Curators Behind the Vision
Curated by Amna Abulhoul, the Executive Creative Director of Entertainment and Experiences at Expo City Dubai, and Anthony Bastic AM, CEO of AGB Creative, this year’s exhibition highlights the diverse talents from three generations of Emirati artists. They explore not just the physical illumination provided by light but also its deeper cultural symbolism and significance in local traditions.
Amna Abulhoul expresses her enthusiasm for the selected artists, stating, “The artists we have brought together for the second edition of Dhai Dubai are a radiant reflection of the UAE’s extraordinary spectrum of talent. Each of the seven Emirati voices presents their own unique interpretation of light, contributing to a vast tapestry that mirrors our nation’s aspirations.”
The Artists and Their Crafts
Among the featured artists is Fatma Lootah, a renowned cultural ambassador known for her emotive abstract works. Her artistic journey spans several decades, with a notable history of exhibitions in destinations such as Times Square and various venues across Europe, North America, Asia, and North Africa. Based in Verona since the 1980s, her roots in Dubai continue to inspire her creations at House 35 in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.
Then there’s Mohammed Kazem, an internationally recognized artist using video, photography, and performance to explore themes tied to environment and experience. As an original member of the artist collective known as “The Five,” Kazem’s work often focuses on the transient nature of sound and light, capturing the complexities of modern Emirati life.
Alia Bin Omair, a prominent Emirati jewelry designer, incorporates her cultural identity with a blend of contemporary and traditional craftsmanship. Her unique creations, which often utilize found objects, reflect her deep respect for Emirati heritage.
Exploring Identity Through Art
Khalid Al Banna stands out for his pioneering work in collage and sculpture. His architectural background informs his creative process, allowing him to explore identity and urban transformation through layered textile collages and geometric sculptures. A key contributor to Dubai’s public art scene, his work includes the Union Monument, commissioned by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.
AlZaina Lootah, a visionary architect, translates abstract concepts into meaningful design, rooted in her rich upbringing in the UAE. Similarly, Ahmad AlAreef combines history and contemporary identity in his multidisciplinary practice, using photography, painting, and sculpture to bridge traditional and modern narratives.
Lastly, Hessa Alghandi transforms cultural narratives into contemporary expressions through innovative designs in interior architecture. Her Hessa Archives platform and collaborations with brands like Adidas illustrate her ability to honor tradition while creating functional, resonant art.
Engaging the Community
Dhai Dubai isn’t just about visual experiences; it also fosters community interaction through dynamic public talks and workshops. Hosted at the upcoming House of Arts, Expo City Dubai’s new multidisciplinary space, these opportunities aim to make regional art more accessible while enriching visitors’ understanding of the cultural narratives behind the artworks.
Celebrating a Sustainable Future
The Dhai Dubai light art exhibition aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, promoting sustainable urban living. Located in Expo City Dubai, recognized as one of five hubs within this ambitious initiative, the exhibition serves as a platform for innovative ideas and solutions while fostering both cultural and artistic growth.
The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, under the guidance of Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, continues to enhance Dubai’s cultural landscape by building bridges of dialogue among various cultures. This commitment solidifies the Emirate’s status as a global hub for creativity and talent, fostering a thriving environment for artists and cultural expressions.
Dhai Dubai promises to be an immersive experience that beautifully intertwines light, art, and culture, shining a spotlight on the richness of Emirati heritage while encouraging new creative dialogues in the heart of Dubai.
