The Majlis Course: A Golfing Legacy in the Heart of Dubai

As the Dubai Desert Classic kicks off on January 22, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the Majlis Course at Emirates Golf Club, a site that has shaped golf in the region since its inception.

A Historic Beginning

Opened in 1988, the Majlis Course wasn’t just the first grass golf course in the UAE; it marked a pivotal moment in Dubai’s history. With its lush fairways rising from the arid desert, this challenging course showcased Dubai’s ambition and determination to establish itself on the international golfing scene.

“It holds a very special place in the history of Dubai,” says Chris May, CEO of Dubai Golf. “Emirates Golf Club really set the tone for what Dubai has become as a golf tourist destination.”

The Birth of an Iconic Tournament

Just a year after its opening, the Majlis Course hosted its inaugural professional tournament in 1989, originally called the Karl Litten Desert Classic. This event has now become Dubai’s longest-running professional golf tournament.

“The Emirates Golf Club is an ideal venue for hosting this event,” May explains. “It’s one of the best courses in the world, and players are always welcomed in a special way.” With an iconic clubhouse acting as the tournament’s centerpiece, the atmosphere during the event is electric, drawing in large crowds and players alike.

Notable Victories and Champions

Throughout its history, the Dubai Desert Classic has seen numerous celebrated golfers take home the trophy. Iconic players like Seve Ballesteros, Fred Couples, and Tiger Woods have left their mark on this prestigious event. Woods’ memorable win in 2008, featuring an impressive rally on the back nine, is still talked about among golf enthusiasts.

Rory McIlroy also made headlines when he secured his first professional victory at this tournament in 2009. According to Stephen Gallacher, who defended his title in 2014 and 2015, having watched legends compete from his youth, the event has always held a special allure.

What Makes the Majlis Course Unique?

The Majlis Course is more than just a visually stunning venue; it’s a real test of skill for both professional and amateur golfers. With immaculate conditions and strategically designed holes, the course maintains its reputation as one of the best in the world.

“The back nine is where the drama truly unfolds,” May adds. “There’s an abundance of birdie opportunities, but the 18th hole adds an extra layer of challenge with its water hazard.” In the past year alone, the Majlis hosted 46,000 rounds, drawing enthusiasts from around the globe who are eager to play where their heroes have once competed.

Gallacher agrees, noting how the course has evolved. “It’s definitely tougher than it was. The fairways and greens are firm and fast; golfers need to hit accurately to perform well.”

A Growing Golfing Community

Beyond the Majlis, the Emirates Golf Club has expanded its offerings. With the addition of the floodlit Faldo Course and the entertainment venue TopGolf Dubai, the complex caters to both serious golfers and casual visitors, reinforcing Dubai’s status as a vibrant sporting and leisure destination.

The Lasting Impact of the Majlis Course

The Majlis Course and its striking clubhouse, with its signature tent-like design, serve as a symbol of Dubai’s remarkable transformation. From a grass course set against a backdrop of sand to a world-renowned golfing hub, the venue has become a key player in the city’s sporting landscape.

As the Dubai Desert Classic unfolds, the Majlis continues to be a place where legends emerge and golf history is written, embodying the spirit of ambition and excellence that defines Dubai.
