Celebrating International Yoga Day Across the UAE

On Saturday, the United Arab Emirates transformed into a sprawling canvas of wellness as thousands of residents came together to celebrate International Yoga Day. From Abu Dhabi to Sharjah and Dubai, the event drew participants of all ages and backgrounds, emphasizing the significance of yoga in nurturing physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Abu Dhabi: A Grand Beginning

The festivities commenced in Abu Dhabi at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), where the atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm as yoga mats stretched across the venue. The event started at 10 AM, with expert instructors leading the participants through invigorating sessions. Among the dignitaries present were Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, and Sanjay Sudhir, the Indian ambassador to the UAE.

A standout moment featured Zayne Merzi Sodawaterwala, a teenager on the autism spectrum, who was recognized for setting a world record in skating by completing a 10km inline skate in just 40 minutes and 4 seconds. This heartfelt acknowledgment highlighted not just athletic achievement but also the spirit of inclusivity and determination.

A Celebration of Achievement

The Indian Ambassador, Sanjay Sudhir, presented Zayne with his award, stating, “We are celebrating Zayne’s achievement and yoga together. Yoga teaches us focus, balance, and discipline. His story inspires all of us.” Zayne expressed that receiving the award on UAE Father’s Day made the recognition even more special: “Today is like my home. It’s a gift for my father, and it means the world to say that every child like me matters."

Sharjah’s Evening Vibes

As the sun set, the celebrations extended to Sharjah, where the Consulate General of India hosted yet another yoga event at the Expo Centre. Hundreds of residents flocked to the venue, including eager schoolchildren who arrived early to immerse themselves in the ancient practice. Health experts discussed yoga’s long-term benefits and guided participants through accessible postures, emphasizing regular practice for managing various health issues.

Meenakshi Raman, a Sharjah resident, shared her excitement: “Practicing in a large group gives you more energy. It feels special to connect with others who are passionate about wellness.”

Dubai: Indoor Unity in Movement

In Dubai, the festivities unfolded at Danube Sports World, where over 300 attendees, including families and seasoned practitioners, gathered for a session that combined breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. Collaborating with the Dubai Sports Council, the event focused on fostering community through health and wellness.

Anis Sajan, Vice Chairman of Danube Group, underscored the necessity of pausing to breathe. “In our fast-paced lives, we forget to breathe right, and that one habit can change your life,” he remarked. His reflection on yoga serving as a gateway to healing resonates deeply in these challenging times.

Promoting Collective Healing

The significance of yoga extends beyond the personal; it serves as a collective pathway towards healing. Sajan emphasized, “Yoga is not just about movement; it is about reflection and grounding. In a world with so much chaos, coming together to heal as a community is essential.”

Ahmad Ibrahim Busherin, head of the sponsorship and partnership section at Dubai Sports Council, echoed this sentiment: “This event reflects our commitment to encouraging healthy, active lifestyles across the UAE. Supporting initiatives like this inspires physical and mental well-being.”

Final Thoughts

International Yoga Day in the UAE was not just an event; it was a vibrant tapestry of community spirit, personal stories, and a shared commitment to wellness. From heartwarming recognition tales to unifying group practice, the day celebrated the rich cultural tapestry of yoga and its ability to bring diverse communities together, fostering a sense of belonging and mindfulness across the UAE.
