Dubai Launches 40 Air-Conditioned Rest Areas for Delivery Riders Amid Summer Heat
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially launched 40 air-conditioned rest areas for delivery riders, providing much-needed relief during the peak summer heat. This initiative, which is now fully operational, aims to enhance rider safety, reduce accident risks, and improve the overall quality of life for those working in the delivery sector.
Historically, delivery riders in Dubai often sought shade under palm trees, mosque verandas, or in mall parking lots to escape the sweltering temperatures that can soar above 45 degrees Celsius during the summer months. The introduction of these dedicated rest areas marks a significant shift in how the city supports its delivery workforce.
Delivery Riders Rest Areas: From Three Shelters to Forty
The project to establish rest areas for delivery riders was first announced in November 2023, initially planning only three locations. However, as demand surged and concerns regarding rider welfare in extreme heat became more pronounced, the initiative expanded rapidly.
The RTA’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by delivery riders, who often spend over eight hours on the road each day. Prior to the establishment of these facilities, riders had limited options for respite from the heat, leading to unsafe working conditions.
Delivery Riders Rest Areas: What Each Stop Offers?
The newly constructed facilities are strategically located across key areas in Dubai, including Hessa Street, Al Khawaneej, Al Barsha, Al Satwa, Oud Metha, Al Karama, and Arjan. Each site was selected based on operational data and assessments of high-demand delivery zones, ensuring that they are conveniently placed where riders frequently operate.
Each rest area is equipped with air conditioning, water dispensers, and mobile phone charging stations. The design minimizes direct sunlight exposure while providing thermal insulation, ensuring a comfortable environment for riders. Each facility can accommodate approximately ten riders and includes designated motorcycle parking.
Ahmed Mahboob, Chief Executive Officer at the Licensing Agency of the RTA, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that traffic safety remains the highest priority for the authority. He noted that the integrated governance framework developed for the delivery sector aims to ensure effective oversight and continuously improve service standards.
Part of a Wider National Effort
The RTA’s initiative is part of a broader movement to enhance the welfare of delivery workers across the UAE. In the previous year, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation distributed over 10,000 air-conditioned rest stations nationwide through various delivery platforms, including Talabat, Deliveroo, Noon, and Careem.
These efforts align with a national policy shift toward better treatment of the delivery workforce. Additionally, new rest areas have been established in bus and metro stations in collaboration with Deliveroo and the UAE Food Bank, which will provide 7,500 free hot meals to delivery drivers.
