Chicago Barber Faces Neglect as Family Stranded in Dubai After Seeking Government Assistance

CHICAGO — A family from Chicago is currently stranded in Dubai, having traveled to the region for a golf tournament just as war broke out in Iran. They now find themselves struggling to return home amid the escalating conflict.

The U.S. State Department reports that approximately 20,000 Americans have made their way back to the United States from the Middle East since hostilities began on Saturday. A dedicated task force has facilitated the return of around 10,000 individuals. However, not all citizens have found similar assistance. Axel Ramos, a Chicago barber, described his family’s experience as a harrowing ordeal.

Ramos, alongside his wife and several friends, boarded a flight that was eventually canceled after sitting on the tarmac for four hours. Since then, they have been confined to a hotel, grappling with uncertainty and anxiety about their situation.

“It turned from scary to a nightmare. It’s just insane,” Ramos stated, detailing the frightening sounds of explosions they have encountered while trying to secure their passage home. As frustration mounts, he expressed the urgent need to escape the region, emphasizing the lack of communication from the U.S. government regarding their plight.

Plans to leave have included pursuing multiple canceled flights in hopes of securing a departure. Currently, Ramos hopes to make his way to the airport in search of available options.

In the meantime, other Chicago residents have faced similar difficulties. A group of women from the northern suburbs, initially en route to a mental health retreat in Bali, has also experienced the same challenges since the onset of the conflict. They recently expressed optimism upon booking a flight, potentially returning to Chicago by Sunday.

Recent updates suggest that some flights originating from the Middle East are beginning to arrive at O’Hare International Airport. Additionally, Qatar Airways has initiated limited “relief flights” as the situation remains precarious.

The urgent circumstances surrounding families stranded abroad have led to calls for increased action. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has been vocal about the necessity for a coordinated evacuation plan to assist those stuck in the conflict-torn area.
