Heriot-Watt University (HWU) Dubai: A Transformation in Learning Environments

Heriot-Watt University (HWU) in Dubai has made significant strides in enhancing its educational infrastructure through a collaborative partnership with AVI-SPL, a leader in audiovisual solutions. Spanning a considerable 20,000 square meters across seven stories, the campus aimed to develop a connected, flexible, and future-proof learning environment. The primary focus was to support a wide range of teaching and collaboration styles that cater to both students and faculty.

From Vision to Reality

AVI-SPL was entrusted with the task of deploying modern audiovisual (AV) solutions throughout the facility. The collaborative approach that the company took during the competitive tender process set them apart. Their proposal was not merely about the latest technology; it struck a balance between cutting-edge innovation, scalability, and thoughtful design. One of the paramount requirements was the seamless integration of these AV systems with existing IT and security frameworks, ensuring a user-friendly experience for all campus users.

The AV ecosystem transformed HWU’s Dubai campus into a versatile educational hub. Here’s a breakdown of the various spaces equipped with sophisticated AV technology:

  • 40 Classrooms: Flexible setups allow for independent use or room combining, specifically tailored to accommodate various teaching formats.

  • 15 Meeting Rooms: These feature advanced Crestron control systems, Neat video bars for video conferencing, and Crestron AirMedia for convenient wireless sharing.

  • Study and Huddle Rooms: A total of 10 study rooms and 10 huddle spaces offer self-service collaborative environments complete with wireless connectivity.

  • Teaching Studios: Four teaching studios equipped with broadcasting capabilities support hybrid and remote instruction, reflecting the evolving needs of modern education.

  • Collaborative Lecture Rooms: Two interactive teaching spaces designed for up to 90 participants encourage dynamic learning experiences.

  • Technical and PC Labs: With three technical teaching labs and two PC-based labs, AV technology enhances practical education.

  • Town Hall Venue and LED Wall: The venue is fitted with Samsung high-resolution displays and robust sound systems for hosting events, featuring a striking 13.5m x 1.5m Samsung LED wall at the entrance that serves as an impressive digital signage platform.

To facilitate this expansive AV infrastructure, AVI-SPL incorporated a range of top-tier technologies. Epson projectors ensure clarity in large-format teaching spaces, while Crestron systems offer unified control. Moreover, equipment from Middle Atlantic Products provides robust AV racking and infrastructure, and Neat technology supports efficient video collaboration. Wolfvision systems enhance content sharing and visualization during lessons, making the learning process more interactive.

Managing Complexity

Managing such a comprehensive project required meticulous coordination across multiple contractors and technology systems. Many AV elements relied on external fit-out packages, necessitating proactive planning and communication. AVI-SPL’s approach included thorough documentation, early stakeholder engagement, and close collaboration on-site to minimize potential complications.

A key component of this project was the intuitive control system, designed to simplify the user experience. Crestron-powered touch panels provide effortless operation across different room types, significantly reducing friction and increasing technology adoption among staff. This focus on user experience was fundamental to the project’s overall success.

Real Results, Ongoing Support

The integration of advanced AV technology has significantly transformed HWU’s Dubai campus, creating a model for digitally-enabled education. Faculty and students now enjoy interactive, adaptable spaces that foster active learning and collaboration. Additionally, the initiative includes an on-site AVI-SPL technician who ensures smooth day-to-day operations and promptly addresses any technical issues.

Anas Abu-Ghoush, head of information services at HWU, expressed satisfaction with the collaboration, stating, “AVI-SPL’s expertise and professionalism were evident from day one. Their team collaborated closely with us to design and implement tailored audio-visual solutions that transformed our classrooms and meeting spaces into dynamic, interactive environments. The team delivered seamlessly and has provided invaluable ongoing support, making them our trusted partner as we plan our future campus expansion.”

Partnership for the Future

The success of this initial AV installation has set the stage for an enduring partnership between HWU and AVI-SPL. The university has already enlisted AVI-SPL’s expertise for AV systems in its forthcoming 2025 campus extension. As Ahmed Habib, business development manager at AVI-SPL, remarked, “This project exemplifies how we transform visions into reality. By combining cutting-edge technology with a deep understanding of our clients’ needs, we create environments that inspire learning, collaboration, and growth.”

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to innovation and excellence in education, promising a bright future for students and faculty alike at Heriot-Watt University Dubai.
