Inauguration Under Royal Patronage
The fourth Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport was officially inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai. This significant event took place at the Dubai World Trade Centre, under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE.

Organized by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, the congress attracted over 3,000 participants from around the globe, including more than 80 distinguished speakers. These speakers comprised senior officials, researchers, and industry experts focused on advancing self-driving technologies. The event served as a platform for sharing insights and innovations in the rapidly evolving field of autonomous transport.
Celebrating Achievements in Self-Driving Technology
During the congress, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed honored the strategic partners and sponsors involved in the Dubai World Congress and the Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2025. A highlight of the event was the ceremony recognizing the winners of the Dubai World Challenge, which aims to promote advancements in self-driving technologies.
Upon his arrival, His Highness was welcomed by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA. He was briefed on the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Zone, an innovative area covering approximately 15 square kilometers, which includes three operational zones: Al Jaddaf Metro Station, Dubai Festival City, and Dubai Creek Harbour.
The Dubai Self-Driving Transport Zone
The Dubai Self-Driving Transport Zone has been designed as a comprehensive hub for various modes of autonomous mobility. This includes the Dubai Metro, autonomous buses, logistics vehicles, road-cleaning machines, delivery robots, and even autonomous abras. The zone aims to provide users with a range of transport options tailored to their needs, balancing speed, cost, and convenience across both land and marine mobility.
Strategic Goals for the Future
His Highness also reviewed the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy for 2025–2040, which aims to increase the share of trips made through autonomous transport from the current 20.4% to 25% by 2030 and 36% by 2040. This ambitious plan underscores Dubai’s commitment to becoming a leader in smart transport solutions.
Insights from Industry Leaders
The congress featured a keynote address by Sol Rashidi, recognized as the world’s first Chief AI Officer. In her speech, she discussed the transformative role of artificial intelligence across various sectors. Rashidi emphasized the importance of integrating AI technologies into daily life to enhance services and improve overall quality of life. She also highlighted the need for governments and cities to strengthen their digital infrastructure and update legislation to facilitate the adoption of these future-oriented technologies.

The Dubai World Challenge
The Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport was another focal point of the event. With a total prize pool of $3 million, the challenge aims to incentivize innovation in autonomous transport solutions. The first and second place winners received $1.2 million, while the remaining funds are allocated to support the operations of the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Zone.
This year’s challenge saw an impressive response, with participation requests exceeding expectations by 170%. Five local and international consortia successfully qualified for the final stage, showcasing the global interest in self-driving technologies.
Honoring the Winners
During the ceremony, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer presented awards to the winners of the Dubai World Challenge. The consortium of WeRide and Deutsche Bahn secured first place for their project that integrates a self-driving taxi with a self-driving bus, earning a prize of $900,000. Second place went to Zealous Technology from Singapore, recognized for their comprehensive self-driving transport solution, which focuses on transporting heavy goods and providing autonomous last-mile logistics. They received a prize of $300,000.
