Abu Dhabi Launches Healthy Living Strategy

Abu Dhabi has unveiled its exciting new initiative, the Healthy Living Strategy. This comprehensive, cross-sector plan aims to enhance community health and well-being throughout the emirate, marking a significant step forward in promoting healthier lifestyles.

Goals of the Healthy Living Strategy

This initiative, developed under the guidance of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, is designed to empower both citizens and residents to lead longer and more fulfilling lives. By emphasizing preventive measures, the strategy targets prevalent non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, which are increasingly affecting the population.

A Collaborative Approach

The Healthy Living Strategy represents a multi-year commitment that seeks to unite various stakeholders, including government bodies, the private sector, communities, and individuals, in the collective mission of creating a healthier Abu Dhabi.

Three Pillars of Focus

In its initial phase, the strategy will concentrate on three core pillars:

  • Increasing Physical Activity
  • Improving Diet and Nutrition
  • Strengthening Awareness and Knowledge

Additionally, the strategy underscores the significance of sleep and mental well-being as essential components of health. To advance these priorities, the plan calls for improved infrastructure, supportive policies, regulations, and initiatives that will facilitate healthier choices in everyday life.

Insights from Health Experts

Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, emphasizes that health is influenced long before one enters a clinic. It is shaped by nutritional choices, physical activity, and the environment we inhabit. He states, “Moving more and eating well must become priorities that define how we live, learn, and work.” Through cross-sector collaboration and data-driven insights, the strategy aims to not only protect individuals but also to strengthen families and foster resilient communities.

Driving Behavior Change

At its essence, the Healthy Living Strategy seeks to instill lasting behavioral change. While every individual carries the responsibility for their health, this initiative aims to make healthy choices more accessible and sustainable, weaving prevention into the fabric of daily living.

Leveraging digital intelligence, the strategy will identify high-risk groups, allowing for targeted initiatives and policies where they are needed most. This tailored approach ensures that the focus is always on those who can benefit from it the most.

Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji, Executive Director of Healthy Living, describes the mission as straightforward: “To make healthy living the easy choice for every citizen and resident in Abu Dhabi.” The strategy is informed by behavioral science and designed to focus on areas of greatest need, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness.

Existing Initiatives and Future Plans

The Healthy Living Strategy aims to enhance ongoing health initiatives across the emirate. By consolidating existing efforts, the plan intends to accelerate their impact and channel resources from both governmental and private sectors towards areas that will yield the greatest benefits, such as developing active infrastructure, promoting nutritious food, and enhancing health awareness.

More than 20 initiatives have already been approved as part of this strategy. These initiatives will be implemented over the coming year by a diverse range of government entities and private sector partners, reflecting a commitment to comprehensive community health improvement.

Through this ambitious plan, Abu Dhabi is not only addressing current health challenges but is also laying the groundwork for a healthier future for all its residents.
