Abu Dhabi and Dubai ranked among the world’s most competitive cities, BCG report reveals

Published:

Abu Dhabi and Dubai have been recognised as two of the world’s most competitive cities, according to the latest report from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The “Cities of Choice 4.0” report highlights the UAE’s strong performance across various metrics, including social capital, economic opportunity, quality of life, and digital governance, positioning the nation as a leader in urban competitiveness globally, as reported by Gulf Today.

The report evaluates 80 cities based on five key dimensions, combining objective data with resident sentiment surveys. It reveals that cities in the UAE consistently outperform the global average in nearly every aspect of resident experience. This comprehensive study, now in its fourth edition, identifies critical factors that correlate with resident advocacy and long-term competitive positioning.

Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai excel in BCG’s five dimensions of urban competitiveness: Economic Opportunities, Livability, Social Capital, Engagement with Governments, and Speed of Change. They significantly exceed the global average in nearly all resident experience measures.

Christian Schwaerzler, Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG, noted that cities that attract residents and talent are not solely defined by their infrastructure but by the tangible outcomes they deliver in daily life. He emphasised that the UAE’s urban development model is resident-centred, which is reflected in the loyalty and advocacy of its residents.

Abu Dhabi showcases strong social connection metrics, while Dubai ranks twelfth globally in Social Capital, leading all Middle Eastern cities in this category. Residents report high levels of community participation and social generosity, with the UAE’s diverse expatriate community contributing to these positive scores.

In terms of Economic Opportunities, Dubai ranks fifth globally, driven by high household incomes and a robust corporate presence. The report indicates that UAE residents enjoy above-average confidence in career development and financial accessibility, outperforming many Western counterparts.

Dubai also ranks ninth globally in Engagement with Governments, highlighting its strong performance in digital public services and resident satisfaction. The report notes a significant global improvement in residents’ ability to use online tools for city-related issues, with the UAE among the highest performers in this area.

In leisure activities, Abu Dhabi and Dubai lead globally, with residents spending an average of nine to ten hours per week at leisure venues, well above the global average. Additionally, the cities excel in healthcare and housing affordability, with residents rating these aspects positively compared to global standards.

Dubai stands out in tourism and business travel, recording the highest inbound visitor spending among the 80 cities studied. It is also one of only two cities, alongside Istanbul, that significantly outperforms peers in international flight connectivity, benefiting from the growing trend of combining business and leisure travel.

Suresh Subudhi, Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG, remarked that the data illustrates the future trajectory of global urban competitiveness. He noted that cities with strong digital infrastructure and resident-focused governance are leading the way, indicating that the Middle East is not only keeping pace with global leaders but is also shaping the future of competitive urban environments.
