Brendan Taylor’s remarkable century and Brian Bennett’s unbeaten 71 propelled Zimbabwe to a strong position of 326/5 at the close of play on the first day of their inaugural Test against Afghanistan at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday. Taylor’s performance marked his seventh Test century, making him the second oldest player to achieve this milestone at 40 years and 272 days.
Zimbabwe dominated the early sessions, with Taylor and Bennett forming a formidable partnership that frustrated Afghanistan’s bowlers. Taylor’s innings included 10 boundaries and four sixes, showcasing his control and aggression. His return to Test cricket comes after a four-month hiatus, having last played against Bangladesh in 2025.
Despite Zimbabwe’s strong start, Afghanistan mounted a comeback in the final session, taking three wickets for 64 runs. Ziaur Rehman was the standout bowler for Afghanistan, claiming two wickets for 30 runs. The Afghan bowlers tightened their grip after Taylor’s dismissal, which came just before the drinks break when Hashmatullah Shahidi lured him into a miscue that was caught by Rahman.
Zimbabwe’s innings was characterized by a solid foundation laid by their openers, allowing Taylor and Bennett to build a significant partnership. Taylor’s century places him second among Zimbabwean players for the most Test centuries, trailing only Andy Flower, who has 12. Taylor’s performance in Asia has been particularly impressive, with an average of 46.66 over 17 innings.
As the match progresses, Zimbabwe will look to consolidate their position and build on their first-day performance, while Afghanistan will aim to capitalize on their late-session momentum to restrict Zimbabwe’s scoring in the coming days.
