Protests over cost of living escalate to violence and looting in Germany

Published:

Protests in Germany over the rising cost of living escalated into violence late Saturday, with rioters looting shops in central Frankfurt. The unrest, which also spread to cities like Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg, saw police deploying water cannons to disperse crowds that targeted emergency workers with projectiles.

Initially, thousands participated in largely peaceful demonstrations organized by the group Gen Z regelt, advocating for better funding in education, addressing the high cost of living, and opposing military service. The protests reflect a growing discontent among youth, echoing similar movements in France, where over 320,000 people demonstrated on the same day.

Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that police had successfully prevented violence akin to recent riots in Paris, emphasizing the need for “harsh punishments” for those involved in the looting. Authorities reported numerous arrests in Frankfurt, where a significant section of the main shopping street was cordoned off.

While organizers estimated around 36,000 participants, police figures indicated approximately 18,000 took part in the protests across major cities. Lina Friedrich, a spokesperson for Gen Z regelt, articulated the group’s goals, stating, “What matters most to us is better support for the health and education systems. We are against compulsory military service and we are in favour of a fairer distribution of the burden.”

The protests highlight a broader trend of youth activism in Germany, as young people increasingly voice their frustrations over economic challenges and social issues. As the situation develops, authorities remain on high alert to prevent further violence.

According to the BBC, the protests are part of a larger wave of demonstrations across Europe, signaling a potential shift in public sentiment regarding economic policies and social justice.
