The NBA has announced that its opening-night rosters for the 2026-27 season will feature a record 125 international players, with France leading the way as the first country outside Canada to do so in 13 years. This milestone highlights the league’s growing global influence and the increasing representation of international talent.
As the season kicks off, the NBA continues its trend of showcasing international players, marking the 13th consecutive year with at least 100 players from abroad on opening-night rosters. A total of 43 countries are represented across six continents, underscoring the league’s commitment to expanding its reach worldwide.
France Takes the Lead
France stands out with 17 players on the opening-night rosters, led by San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, a two-time All-Star and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. This marks a significant achievement for French basketball, as it surpasses Canada, which has held the top spot for the past 12 seasons with 16 players. Other notable countries include Australia with nine players, Germany with seven, and Nigeria and Serbia, each contributing six players.
International Representation Across Teams
Several NBA teams are particularly notable for their international rosters. The Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, and Washington Wizards each feature seven international players, showcasing the diverse talent pool within the league. Among the 70 European players included, stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece, Nikola Jokic from Serbia, and Luka Doncic from Slovenia are set to make an impact this season.
Global Expansion Efforts
In addition to the diverse player representation, the NBA is also focusing on expanding its global footprint. This season, the league will host three games outside the US and Canada, including a matchup between the Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers in Mexico City on November 7. Following that, the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs will play in Paris and Manchester in January, further promoting the sport internationally.
According to the NBA, this growing international presence not only enriches the league but also enhances the overall fan experience, as basketball continues to gain popularity around the world.
