Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub announces visibility details for Jumada al-Awwal 1448 crescent moon

Published:

The Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub (SSAH) has announced that the crescent moon marking Jumada al-Awwal 1448 AH will not be visible after sunset on October 11, 2026. This conclusion is based on astronomical calculations, which indicate that the new moon will occur shortly before sunset, making it undetectable to the naked eye or through telescopes at that time.

According to SSAH, the moon will reach its central conjunction at 7:50 PM on October 10, 2026, with the topocentric conjunction for Sharjah occurring at 8:47 PM local time. The age of the crescent at sunset on October 11 will be approximately 21 hours and 9 minutes, and it will remain above the horizon for just 15 minutes after sunset, positioned at an altitude of 3 degrees and 6 minutes. The angular distance from the sun will be about 11 degrees and 32 minutes, which further complicates visibility.

Implications for Moon Sighting

Countries that utilize astronomical calculations or informed visual sighting methods are expected to commence Jumada al-Awwal on Monday, October 12, 2026. In contrast, nations that require the crescent to be sighted with the naked eye or through optical telescopes after sunset will likely begin the month on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. This distinction highlights the varying practices in moon sighting across different regions.

Advancing Astronomical Knowledge

SSAH’s announcement is part of its broader mission to enhance public understanding of astronomy. The hub encourages the use of advanced astrophotography techniques to detect the crescent moon before sunset, thereby fostering a deeper appreciation for celestial events among the community. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s commitment to promoting scientific knowledge and innovation.

As the UAE continues to invest in space exploration and astronomical research, the SSAH plays a crucial role in educating the public and providing accurate information regarding celestial phenomena. The upcoming moon sighting for Jumada al-Awwal serves as an opportunity for residents to engage with the scientific community and participate in the cultural practices surrounding lunar observations.
