Max Verstappen wins chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix, securing first victory of 2026

Published:

Max Verstappen clinched his first victory of the 2026 Formula One season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, held on October 4, 2026, in Sepang, Malaysia. The Red Bull Racing driver navigated through chaotic conditions, including a lengthy rain delay, to secure his 72nd career win, finishing 2.307 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

Verstappen’s triumph marked a significant return to form for both him and Red Bull, who had struggled in the early part of the season. The race was characterized by unpredictable weather and multiple incidents, including a safety car deployment that reshuffled the field. Verstappen’s victory comes nine years after the last F1 race at the Sepang International Circuit, where he last celebrated a win.

Race Highlights

After a 100-minute delay due to a tropical rainstorm, the race commenced with half the drivers on intermediate tyres. Verstappen initially lost ground but regained the lead after a strategic pit stop on lap nine, following a crash involving Valtteri Bottas that brought out the safety car. He opted for soft tyres, allowing him to overtake Antonelli and maintain his lead throughout the race.

Antonelli, who currently leads the championship standings, finished second, while seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third place after a remarkable recovery from a poor start. Hamilton had fallen back early on due to a wrong tyre choice but managed to climb back into contention as the race progressed.

Post-Race Reactions

“It is really nice to win after the year we’ve had and all the progression we’ve made,” Verstappen said, reflecting on the challenging race conditions. Antonelli acknowledged the difficulties faced during the race, stating, “It was the maximum we could have done. We struggled, but I am happy to come away with P2.” Meanwhile, George Russell expressed his disappointment after retiring late in the race due to a power failure, stating, “You’ve almost got to laugh… it’s just so many times this season it’s happened.”

The result solidifies Antonelli’s lead in the championship, extending it to 84 points over teammate Russell. The race showcased not only Verstappen’s skill but also the strategic depth of the teams as they navigated the unpredictable conditions.
