Ukraine’s steel industry is facing a potential collapse due to ongoing Russian missile strikes and significant export challenges, according to reports from BBC News. The situation is dire, with warnings that if steelworks remain closed, hundreds of thousands of jobs could be lost, leading to a humanitarian crisis that may extend beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Industry experts have highlighted that the cessation of steel production would severely impact Ukraine’s defence capabilities and reconstruction efforts. Steel is essential for manufacturing military equipment and for repairing infrastructure damaged by the conflict. Russian authorities have justified their attacks on steel plants, claiming that facilities in Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih were involved in producing military hardware.
Efforts to restart operations at the Zaporizhstal steel plant have been thwarted by ongoing air strikes. Oleksandr Vodoviz from Metinvest reported that a furnace was operational for only ten hours before being targeted again. He noted that investing in recovery is currently impractical due to the uncertain situation.
Even if production were to resume, the challenges would persist. Russian strikes on railways have complicated the transportation of steel products within Ukraine, while attacks on ports have made exporting goods perilous. Oleksandr Myronenko remarked that ports are effectively blocked, with every ship facing a 50-50 chance of being attacked during transit.
Additionally, new EU quotas on steel imports, which came into effect on July 1, may exacerbate the difficulties faced by Ukrainian steelmakers. These restrictions could further limit the market for Ukrainian steel, which is already struggling to cope with the impacts of the war.
Despite these challenges, some workers remain hopeful. Denys Maksyshko, a worker at Zaporizhstal, expressed optimism as his colleagues work to clear debris and repair the factory. He likened their efforts to those of soldiers in the trenches, emphasizing the determination of ordinary people to keep the factory operational.
