South Africa clinched the ODI series against Australia with a 32-run victory in Johannesburg, as reported by ARN News Centre. The win came in the second match of the three-game series, allowing South Africa to secure the series with one match remaining.
Batting first after being sent in by Australia, South Africa posted a formidable total of 365 runs for nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs. In response, Australia was bowled out for 333 runs in 49.5 overs, marking South Africa’s 19th ODI victory in their last 25 encounters against the Australians.
South Africa’s success was largely attributed to the performances of Temba Bavuma and David Miller, both of whom scored centuries. Bavuma contributed 103 runs off 116 balls, while Miller delivered a more explosive performance, scoring 142 runs from just 93 balls, including nine sixes. This marked Miller’s career-best score and his eighth ODI century.
Australia’s bowling attack struggled, particularly in the middle overs, where they were hindered by the absence of key players like Pat Cummins and Nathan Ellis, who sustained a side strain during the match. Jack Edwards was the standout bowler for Australia, taking five wickets for 67 runs in his 10 overs.
Despite a strong start from Australia, with captain Mitch Marsh and Travis Head both scoring 84 runs, the middle order faltered under pressure from South Africa’s spin bowlers. Keshav Maharaj, Bjorn Fortuin, and Aiden Markram effectively restricted the Australian batsmen, each taking crucial wickets.
Following the match, Marsh expressed disappointment at the loss, acknowledging South Africa’s superior performance. He emphasized the team’s determination to avoid a series whitewash and their focus on winning the final match in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.
Bavuma praised his team’s all-round performance, highlighting the solid batting foundation and effective bowling that led to their victory. The final match of the series promises to be a crucial encounter as both teams aim to conclude the series on a high note.
