Nairobi to host 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking first event in Africa

Published:

Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking a historic first for Africa, as announced by World Athletics on Tuesday. The Kenyan capital triumphed over bids from London, Munich, and Rome during a council meeting held in Budapest.

The decision also confirmed that Munich will host the 2031 championships, while Beijing is set to host the 2027 event. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe remarked that the council faced a challenging decision due to the high quality of the bids received for both 2029 and 2031.

Coe highlighted the significance of bringing the championships to Africa, stating that Nairobi’s bid was both compelling and emotional. He noted that this decision allows World Athletics to hold its championships across Asia, Africa, and Europe in the next three editions.

He further emphasized the importance of selecting the right host, stating that Nairobi demonstrated readiness and capability to enhance the development of athletics in Kenya and across the continent. Coe expressed confidence that the event would leave a lasting legacy that inspires future generations.

Kenya has previously hosted several international athletics events, including the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa and the World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi in 2021. Nairobi also hosted the African Athletics Championships in 2010.

Coe acknowledged that the Nairobi team learned from their previous bid for the 2025 championships, returning with a stronger proposal. The Kasarani Stadium, which is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027, will serve as the venue for the championships.

This landmark decision is expected to boost the profile of athletics in Africa and provide a platform for local athletes to shine on the world stage. The excitement surrounding the event is palpable, as Nairobi prepares to welcome athletes and fans from around the globe.
