US and Iran exchange retaliatory strikes on ships amid escalating conflict in Gulf of Oman

Published:

The United States and Iran engaged in a series of retaliatory strikes on ships in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday, marking a significant escalation in hostilities that had previously subsided for about a month. The US military reported that it had “permanently disabled” two oil tankers linked to Iran and “completely destroyed” a third vessel near Kharg Island.

In response, Iranian state media confirmed that Tehran had targeted three vessels affiliated with the US, as well as three oil tankers navigating through the Strait of Hormuz along what it described as an “unauthorised” route. The US Central Command (Centcom) has been approached for comments regarding these Iranian claims.

The latest strikes occurred shortly after President Donald Trump referred to the ongoing conflict as “small potatoes,” indicating little progress towards resolving the six-month war. He has not yet commented on the recent attacks.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on social media that any Iranian aggression towards US ships would result in the destruction of their oil tankers. This statement underscores the US’s firm stance in the region amid rising tensions.

According to Centcom, prior to the US strikes, two American warships were targeted by Iran. The command reported successfully evading multiple attacks from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which were aimed at a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. Fortunately, no American personnel were reported injured during these incidents.

Centcom further asserted that the Iranian oil tankers targeted in the US strikes were part of a “multi-billion-dollar shadow network” that finances the IRGC and its regional proxies. This claim highlights the ongoing concerns regarding Iran’s influence and activities in the region.

The situation remains fluid as both nations continue to exchange strikes, raising concerns about the potential for further escalation in the Gulf of Oman. The international community is closely monitoring developments as tensions between the US and Iran show no signs of abating.
