Dubai-it: ‘Running Saved My Life’ – How a 1km Struggle Transformed Dhiren Harchandani’s Journey
Dhiren Harchandani, a 50-year-old business coach based in Dubai, experienced a profound personal transformation through running. After years of relentless work that left him both physically and emotionally drained, he transitioned from participating in a 3km fun run to completing marathons, Ironman races, and mountain climbs.
Harchandani describes a particularly dark period in his life marked by the death of his father-in-law, a disconnection from his own identity, and the missed birth of his first child while pursuing a business deal. He reflected on how, despite appearing successful from an external perspective, this success came at a significant cost to his relationships, health, and self-esteem. He noted that he often arrived at the office by 8:30 AM only to find himself falling asleep, feeling like a stranger in his own body.
A diagnosis of hyperthyroidism prompted Harchandani to acknowledge that he needed to make a change. This change manifested in the form of running.
From One Painful Kilometre to Marathons
Encouraged by a friend to join a three-kilometre fun run, Harchandani decided to test his fitness by attempting to run a single kilometre. He described the experience as nearly overwhelming, stating, “I felt like I was going to die.” However, the run also provided him with a sense of reconnection to his body. He successfully completed the fun run in 2016, which ignited a newfound passion for running.
Following this initial success, Harchandani progressed to longer distances, eventually tackling five and ten-kilometre runs. That same year, he also set his sights on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. For someone who had grown up with asthma, reaching the summit was a monumental achievement. He expressed initial fears about the climb but ultimately found himself among the strongest climbers in his group.
Since then, Harchandani has become an active member of the Dubai running community, Inner Fight, and has participated in various triathlons and marathons globally. His next goal is to qualify for the prestigious Boston Marathon.
How Running Turned His Life Around
Initially, running served as a release for Harchandani, but it soon became the foundation upon which he reorganized his life. To accommodate early morning training sessions, he adjusted his sleeping habits, going to bed around 9:30 PM and waking at 4 AM. This shift in routine also helped him prioritize relationships and commitments that added value to his life.
He emphasized the importance of setting boundaries, stating, “You have to be really tough and say no.” Harchandani believes that running allowed him to address the various issues that had been weighing him down.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
Through his running journey, Harchandani has gleaned several essential life lessons. He emphasizes that prioritizing oneself is not selfish but rather a necessary step to effectively support loved ones. He also highlighted the power of self-belief, stating, “If you believe you can do it … you can.”
Harchandani noted that many limiting beliefs, such as “I’m not a morning person” or “I can’t possibly run 5k,” are narratives we create for ourselves. He has learned that change is attainable and that running has enabled him to disconnect from distractions, allowing for deeper connections with himself and those around him.
The Dubai Community That Shows Up
Dubai has been a backdrop for many significant moments in Harchandani’s life, from marrying his wife and raising his two sons to starting his first business. He acknowledges that his experiences in the city have not always been positive but affirms that everything in his adult life has unfolded there.
After two decades in Dubai, Harchandani appreciates the sense of safety the city offers, which allows individuals to focus on what truly matters. He remarked on the unique diversity of the community, noting friendships with individuals from various cultural backgrounds, including Ukrainian, Malaysian, and Singaporean.
Harchandani values the supportive nature of Dubai, stating, “I don’t think there’s any other place that is as supportive as Dubai.” He believes that the city’s leadership contributes significantly to this sense of security, enabling residents to concentrate on their personal and professional goals.
Angels Along the Track
The community aspect of Dubai is particularly meaningful to Harchandani. He is part of various networks, including alumni groups from Harvard Business School and Stanford, as well as numerous sports communities. He believes that Dubai offers something for everyone, regardless of socioeconomic or ethnic background.
During a recent run along Kite Beach, Harchandani encountered a woman who offered him a drink. Initially hesitant, he soon learned that her gesture epitomized the spirit of the Dubai community. “You don’t have to be part of the community. You are part of the community – you’re in Dubai,” she told him.
Harchandani later described her as an “angel,” a term he uses to refer to the many strangers who selflessly support runners during events. He noted that these individuals often help without seeking recognition, embodying the spirit of generosity prevalent in both Dubai and marathons worldwide.
