Bioplastics from Sugar Offer Promising Alternative to Traditional Plastics Amid Microplastics Crisis

Microplastics have infiltrated oceans, air, food, and water, raising significant environmental concerns. In response, a Massachusetts lab is pioneering the transformation of sugar into bioplastic pellets, which are being developed into compostable products that do not contribute to persistent microplastic pollution.

Innovations in Bioplastic Production

At CJ Biomaterials in Woburn, Massachusetts, lab technicians are experimenting with bioplastic pellets derived from fermented sugar. These pellets are designed to be molded into various products, including forks and food packaging films. Recent tests have produced forks that are suitable for home composting, although some prototypes remain too flexible for certain uses, such as cutting meat. The team is also developing films for food packaging, which, while strong, do not possess the stretchiness of traditional cling wrap.

The company is focused on creating biopolymers that mimic the properties of conventional plastics but can be composted rather than discarded. Initial trials show that these products are breaking down effectively in composting environments, with some items, like straws, already decomposed.

The Growing Concern Over Microplastics

Leah Ford, the marketing director at CJ Biomaterials, noted that the increasing awareness of microplastics is driving interest in bioplastics. She emphasized that the understanding of microplastics is reshaping perceptions of material sustainability. Traditional plastics can persist for decades, fragmenting into harmful microplastics that have been detected in various ecosystems and human tissues. The previous administration’s environmental policies have included commitments to address this contamination.

Bioplastics are categorized as biobased, meaning they are derived from renewable resources such as corn or sugar cane, or as biodegradable, indicating they decompose through natural processes. CJ Biomaterials specializes in polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), which are both marine and soil biodegradable.

Addressing Plastic Waste and Environmental Impact

CJ Biomaterials aims to replace single-use plastics that often cannot be recycled when contaminated with food. Food waste in landfills generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Containers made from CJ’s bioplastic pellets can be composted alongside food scraps, offering a more sustainable waste management solution.

The Woburn facility showcases a range of successful products, including compostable cutlery, straws, and coated cups for beverages. Employees utilize these items daily, reinforcing the practical applications of bioplastics in everyday life. The company collects PHA produced by microbes that convert sugar into energy, which is then processed into granules for manufacturing.

Industry and Policy Implications

CJ Biomaterials is part of the CJ Group, a South Korean conglomerate valued at $32 billion, and has been producing PHA in Indonesia since 2022. The World Wildlife Fund views biobased plastics as a critical component in reducing reliance on fossil fuels, advocating for a decrease in overall plastic production while promoting sustainable alternatives.

Global efforts to combat plastic pollution are ongoing, with nations working towards a comprehensive treaty. However, effective strategies to mitigate plastic waste remain elusive, with further negotiations scheduled for early next year.

U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley has conducted hearings on plastic pollution, exploring potential alternatives, including bioplastics. He acknowledges the promise of bioplastics but stresses the need for more research into their environmental impacts.

Challenges to Widespread Adoption

Despite their potential, bioplastics face several challenges. They are generally more expensive than conventional plastics, and while some cities have composting programs, many areas lack adequate facilities. Additionally, confusion between bioplastics and traditional plastics can complicate composting efforts.

Black Earth Compost, located near the Woburn lab, accepts certified compostable materials. This practice increases the volume of food scraps collected, as consumers can dispose of entire compostable containers without needing to separate food waste.

A study by the 5 Gyres Institute examined various materials, including traditional plastics and bioplastics, across different environments in the U.S. The results indicated that while many biodegradable items decomposed, traditional plastics remained largely intact. The institute’s co-founder, Marcus Eriksen, highlighted the importance of adopting biodegradable options to prevent the proliferation of microplastics in ecosystems.
