Seychelles and France Strengthen 50-Year Diplomatic Ties at Bastille Day Celebration

Last night, President Dr. Patrick Herminie and Her Excellency Anne Tallineau, the Ambassador of France to Seychelles, gathered to commemorate France’s National Day, known as Bastille Day. This event also marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Seychelles and France, highlighting a partnership built on trust and mutual respect.

A Celebration of Enduring Friendship

The reception took place in the presence of notable figures, including First Lady Mrs. Veronique Herminie, Vice-President Mr. Sebastien Pillay and his wife, Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora Mr. Barry Faure, Cabinet Ministers, members of the national assembly, and representatives from the diplomatic corps and the French community. The gathering underscored the close cooperation that has characterized the relationship between the two nations over the decades.

Ambassador Tallineau welcomed guests by expressing gratitude for the warm reception she has experienced since her arrival in Seychelles less than a year ago. She described Seychelles as a nation deeply rooted in its Creole identity, emphasizing its sovereignty and unity in diversity. The Ambassador congratulated Seychelles on its recent 50th Anniversary of Independence, acknowledging the significant progress made in the past five decades.

The Significance of Bastille Day

Ambassador Tallineau elaborated on the importance of Bastille Day, which commemorates the Storming of the Bastille in 1789, a pivotal moment in the French Revolution symbolizing liberty, equality, and fraternity. These ideals continue to guide France’s international engagements and are reflected in its strong ties with Seychelles.

This year holds particular significance, as it marks not only Bastille Day but also the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Ambassador characterized the partnership as one between two sovereign nations, emphasizing the deepening friendship fostered through mutual trust and dialogue.

Broadening Cooperation Across Sectors

The Ambassador highlighted the extensive cooperation between Seychelles and France, which spans various sectors including higher education, culture, maritime security, environmental protection, scientific research, and youth development. She mentioned initiatives such as the MASTRI trilingual Master’s programme, a collaboration involving the University of Seychelles, the University of La Réunion, and Aix Marseille University. Additionally, she noted the partnership between the National Museum of Seychelles and the French National Maritime Museum.

As neighboring nations in the Indian Ocean, France remains committed to regional cooperation through the Indian Ocean Commission, which it assumed the presidency of on June 28. Ambassador Tallineau emphasized shared priorities such as maritime security, resilience to natural disasters, food security, and enhanced regional solidarity.

Joint Efforts in Maritime Security

The longstanding collaboration between the Seychelles Defence Forces and the French Armed Forces in combating maritime crime was also acknowledged. The Ambassador cited a successful joint operation that resulted in the seizure of over 700 kilograms of illicit drugs, showcasing the effectiveness of their partnership.

Ambassador Tallineau recognized Seychelles’ leadership in promoting the Blue Economy and ocean governance. She reaffirmed France’s commitment to expanding scientific collaboration and environmental partnerships. Initiatives aimed at empowering youth, such as the IFS France Youth Talent Development Programme, were highlighted, through which 24 young Seychellois footballers are receiving long-term training in France. Educational exchanges between the Seychelles Tourism Academy and hospitality institutions in La Réunion were also noted.

Future Engagements and Celebrations

Looking ahead, Ambassador Tallineau announced that President Dr. Patrick Herminie will attend the July 14 celebrations in La Réunion as Guest of Honour, at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. Members of the Seychelles Defence Forces will also be recognized during these celebrations, further reflecting the strong ties that unite the two countries.

In remarks delivered on behalf of the Government of Seychelles, Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora Mr. Barry Faure conveyed the congratulations and best wishes of President Dr. Patrick Herminie and the Seychellois people to President Emmanuel Macron and the people of France on this significant occasion.

Minister Faure emphasized France’s special place in Seychelles’ history, noting that the relationship, established shortly after Seychelles gained independence in 1976, has evolved into one of its closest and most valued partnerships. He highlighted cooperation across various sectors, including education, culture, maritime security, environmental protection, health, scientific research, economic development, and regional affairs.

He reiterated that the relationship is guided by mutual trust, continuous dialogue, and a shared determination to address emerging challenges, particularly in the Indian Ocean region. Minister Faure welcomed President Herminie’s upcoming visit to La Réunion, describing it as an important opportunity to further strengthen cooperation among Seychelles, France, and the French territories in the Indian Ocean.

The reception, marked by raised glasses, lively conversations, and cultural performances, celebrated not only France’s National Day but also a friendship that has flourished over half a century.
