41 Traffic Accidents in Six Months Prompt Dubai Police to Enforce Strict New Fines

In Dubai, running a red light can take less than two seconds, yet this brief moment has resulted in four fatalities and 55 injuries since January 1, 2026. The Dubai Police have issued a stern warning to motorists following 41 traffic accidents attributed to red light violations in the emirate this year. This alarming statistic translates to approximately seven accidents each month, or one every four days, with the year still ongoing.

The Human Cost of Six Months

The statistics paint a stark picture. As of now, 41 traffic accidents have been recorded this year, with running red lights leading to four deaths and numerous injuries, ranging from minor to severe. Each statistic represents a life disrupted, with individuals and families affected by these preventable incidents.

Brigadier Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, emphasized the gravity of these violations. He stated that disregarding traffic signals is among the most perilous offenses, often resulting in serious accidents, particularly at busy intersections. He noted, “These incidents are not just numbers. Behind every accident are lives affected and families that have suffered losses.”

41 Traffic Accidents: But Why Do Drivers Still Do It?

Despite clear laws, extensive surveillance, and hefty fines, many drivers continue to run red lights. Common reasons for these violations include the rush to save time, distractions while driving, and misjudging speed and distance. The latter is particularly dangerous; a driver who fails to assess whether they can safely clear an intersection is not making a calculated decision but rather a grave mistake at high speed. In a bustling Dubai intersection, even a split-second error can lead to catastrophic collisions.

The use of mobile phones while driving exacerbates this issue, significantly reducing reaction times. According to Abu Dhabi Police, even hands-free phone use can diminish a driver’s reaction time by up to 35%. When a driver’s attention is diverted, they may not notice a traffic signal change in time.

What the Law Says You Will Lose

Dubai takes red light violations seriously, imposing severe penalties. A driver caught running a red light can face a fine of AED 1,000, accumulate 12 black points, and have their vehicle impounded for 30 days. Recent reforms by Dubai Police have introduced strict measures, including a AED 50,000 fee to retrieve a seized vehicle.

This fee is designed to underscore the seriousness of the offense, equating the financial consequences with the risks involved. In cases resulting in death, the penalties escalate significantly. Individuals found liable for causing a fatal accident may face imprisonment and a fine of at least AED 50,000. For serious violations like running a red light that lead to fatalities, offenders could receive a prison sentence of at least one year and a fine of at least AED 100,000.

41 Traffic Accidents: How Dubai Police Are Watching?

On June 21, 2026, Dubai Police issued a warning that extended beyond mere words. They released a video on social media showcasing actual footage of drivers running red lights across the emirate. This footage, captured by the extensive monitoring systems in place, serves as a reminder that violations are being recorded, even when drivers believe they are unseen.

Dubai Police are committed to enhancing traffic safety through awareness campaigns, monitoring, and advanced technology. Smart cameras are now capable of capturing license plate information, vehicle speed, and the precise moment a signal is crossed. The footage released alongside the warning was a clear message: the cameras are vigilant, even when drivers think they are not being watched.

What Every Driver Must Do Right Now?

Dubai Police urge all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic signals, reduce speed near intersections, maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and remain focused on the road. Importantly, drivers should not attempt to cross on an amber light if it is safe to stop.

The instinct to accelerate through an amber light is common and often leads to red light violations. By the time the light changes, many drivers have already made the decision to proceed. Brigadier Bin Suwaidan highlighted the need for collective responsibility among road users, stating, “Stopping at red lights is not an option. It is a legal duty and an important step in protecting lives and keeping our roads safe.”

The occurrence of 41 traffic accidents in just six months is not an isolated incident; it reflects a troubling trend. The only way to alter this pattern is through proactive decision-making before starting the engine.
