Qatar Launches First Quantum-Safe Communications Link Through Collaboration of Ooredoo, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Ministry of Defense

Doha, Qatar: A significant milestone in cybersecurity has been achieved with the establishment of Qatar’s first quantum-safe communications link. This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a collaboration between Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Ooredoo, and the Ministry of Defense of the State of Qatar. This project not only marks a pivotal moment for the nation but also positions Qatar as a leader in quantum-secure communications within the region.

Quantum Key Distribution: A New Era of Security

The project utilizes Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology, which enables the generation and distribution of encryption keys based on quantum mechanics principles. Unlike traditional encryption methods, QKD provides a higher level of security by ensuring that any attempt to intercept communications is immediately detected. This capability is crucial as cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated.

The operational link has been integrated into Ooredoo Qatar’s existing network infrastructure. This integration is supported by advanced research conducted by HBKU in partnership with ID Quantique (IDQ), a recognized leader in quantum-safe security solutions. The QKD testbed developed through this collaboration is designed to be compatible with current telecommunications systems, utilizing single-photon-based key distribution to create secure connections between various sites.

Enhancing Digital Resilience Amid Cyber Threats

As global attention shifts toward the risks associated with quantum computing, particularly the “harvest-now, decrypt-later” threats, the implementation of quantum-safe technologies is becoming essential for safeguarding sensitive data and critical systems. This initiative not only enhances Qatar’s cybersecurity landscape but also demonstrates the country’s commitment to protecting its strategic assets and national infrastructure.

The successful deployment of this quantum-safe communications link reflects the strength of collaborative efforts across telecommunications, research, and defense sectors. Ooredoo facilitated the deployment within a live telecom environment, showcasing the practical integration of quantum-safe networking capabilities. HBKU spearheaded the scientific development and system integration, fostering local expertise in quantum technologies, while the Ministry of Defense played a crucial role as a strategic stakeholder, emphasizing the importance of secure communications for national priorities.

Statements from Key Stakeholders

Thani Ali Al-Malki, Chief Strategy and Digital Transformation Officer at Ooredoo Qatar, emphasized the significance of collaboration in advancing secure connectivity for the nation. He noted that the deployment of quantum-safe technologies within operational networks supports the evolution of cybersecurity capabilities essential for the next generation of digital infrastructure.

Mohammed Al-Zaidan, Senior Director of Active & Core Network at Ooredoo Qatar, expressed pride in the successful demonstration of the Quantum Key Distribution proof of concept. He highlighted that the project, built on Ooredoo’s advanced dark fiber infrastructure, validated secure key generation and distribution across various fiber-link distances, marking a critical advancement toward metropolitan networks protected by information-theoretic security.

Dr. Saif Al-Kuwari, Director of HBKU’s Qatar Center for Quantum Computing (QC2), remarked on the collaborative spirit that made this initiative possible. He noted that the partnership with Ooredoo and the Ministry of Defense has accelerated Qatar’s quantum capabilities, co-creating technology with both national and global applications.

Maj. Gen. Zayed Ahmed Al-Kuwari, Commander of the Qatar Emiri Signal Corps, stated that this achievement is a product of joint cooperation and a visionary approach to building a secure digital infrastructure. He emphasized its role in enhancing cybersecurity and strengthening Qatar’s digital resilience through advanced communication technologies that are responsive to modern challenges.

Future Implications and Expansion

The successful establishment of this quantum-safe communications link lays the groundwork for expanding quantum-safe connectivity across additional sites and critical sectors, including government and financial services. This positions Ooredoo as a key enabler of secure, next-generation connectivity while supporting ongoing national efforts in research, talent development, and innovation in advanced technologies.
