Congo’s President Announces Visa-Free Access for Africans at 2026 Annual Meetings, Strengthening Continental Integration on Africa Day
Significant Announcement at Annual Meetings
During the opening day of the African Development Bank Group’s (AfDB) 2026 Annual Meetings in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, President Denis Sassou-Nguesso announced a landmark decision to waive visa requirements for all African nationals starting January 1, 2027. This announcement coincided with the celebration of Africa Day, a day dedicated to honoring the continent’s unity and progress.
The declaration was met with enthusiastic applause from the thousands of delegates gathered at the Kintele Conference Centre, marking a pivotal step toward enhancing continental integration.
A Call for Regional Unity
President Sassou-Nguesso emphasized the importance of moving beyond “selfishness and nationalism” to foster deeper regional integration. He urged African nations to actively implement the African Continental Free Trade Area, which aims to facilitate trade and economic cooperation among member states.
The event brought together a diverse group of attendees, including heads of state, ministers, diplomats, investors, civil society representatives, and youth leaders, all focused on advancing Africa’s regional integration and transformation agenda.
Commemorating Africa Day
Africa Day, observed annually on May 25, commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, which later evolved into the African Union. This year’s theme aligns with the African Union’s 2026 focus on “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
In his address, President Sassou-Nguesso called for increased investments to ensure sustainable development and highlighted the urgent need for improved water security and sanitation access across the continent. He stressed that no single African nation could independently finance the infrastructure necessary for transformation, underscoring the need for collective investment in critical sectors such as transportation and energy.
Addressing Climate Change and Ecosystem Restoration
The Congolese leader also renewed calls for global mobilization around ecosystem restoration and reforestation, describing Africa’s forests as “a second green lung of humanity.” He underscored the continent’s vital role in combating climate change and the necessity of preserving its natural resources.
Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, President of the African Development Bank Group, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for deeper continental integration and stronger African institutions. He remarked that Africa’s future hinges on transforming its abundant natural resources into sources of dignity and prosperity.
Strengthening Africa’s Collective Agency
Dr. Ould Tah articulated the importance of enhancing Africa’s “collective agency” through regional integration and the establishment of a new African financing architecture. He noted that the generation of 1963 provided political agency, and it is now the responsibility of current leaders to strengthen this collective agency.
In a video address, African Union Chairperson and President of Burundi, Évariste Ndayishimiye, called for greater solidarity among African nations and urged reforms in global governance systems to better reflect Africa’s growing influence in international affairs.
Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, highlighted the African Development Bank’s critical role as the continent’s premier development financier. She stated that an Africa that invests in itself is one that enhances its economic sovereignty and resilience.
Celebrating African Culture
The program, moderated by veteran Cameroonian journalist Denise Epoté, also featured performances showcasing the richness of African art and culture. Congolese dancers and poetic recitations added to the celebratory atmosphere, emphasizing the continent’s vibrant heritage.
The 2026 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group are themed “Mobilising Africa’s Development Financing at Scale in a Fragmented World,” reflecting the urgent need for coordinated financial strategies to address the continent’s challenges.
