Eid Al Adha 2026: Discover Khorfakkan’s Hidden Gems for a Cool Escape

Dubai: As the extended Eid Al Adha break approaches, residents in the UAE are exploring options for a refreshing getaway. A road trip to Khorfakkan presents an ideal escape, whether for family bonding, a day with friends, or solo exploration.

With the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecasting internal UAE temperatures soaring to 48°C this week, the cooler mountain regions along the east coast promise a more pleasant climate, with temperatures ranging from 28°C to 35°C.

Weather Considerations for Travelers

Travelers are advised to heed NCM warnings regarding sun exposure, particularly during peak afternoon hours. Planning outdoor activities for early morning or evening is recommended to ensure a more enjoyable experience.

How to Reach Khorfakkan

The journey to Khorfakkan typically takes about 1.5 hours from Dubai or Sharjah and approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes from Abu Dhabi, depending on traffic conditions. The primary route is via the S142 highway, commonly referred to as Khorfakkan Road, accessible directly from Emirates Road (E611).

For those departing from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, continue along E611 towards Sharjah, taking the exit for S142 shortly after Tilal City. Travelers from Sharjah city should head towards Sharjah International Airport; the exit for S142 will appear on the right after crossing the airport. This route leads directly through the mountains towards Khorfakkan and the eastern coast of Sharjah.

1. Shees Park and Shees Rest Area: A Green Mountain Retreat

The Shees Rest Area, located along S142 on the way to Khorfakkan City, has become a favored stop for travelers. Known for its nostalgic ties to the famous Friday Market on Fujairah Road, this area has undergone renovations in 2023, enhancing its appeal with numerous restaurants and cafés.

The nearby park features waterfalls, shaded walking trails, terraced seating, and play areas for children, making it an excellent spot for an early breakfast or a leisurely break.

2. Al Rafisah Dam: A Serene Escape

Continuing further along the route, visitors will encounter the Al Rafisah Dam, a tranquil hidden gem perfect for photography. Nestled between rocky cliffs, the area has been developed to offer various recreational activities, including kayaking, pedal boating, and shaded pathways, complemented by artificial waterfalls.

3. Najd Al Maqsar Heritage Village: A Cultural Experience

For those interested in immersing themselves in the UAE’s rich culture and history, Najd Al Maqsar provides a unique experience. Located just a five-minute drive from Al Rafisah Dam, this restored heritage village features traditional stone houses, mountain pathways, and historic watchtowers overlooking the valley.

4. Khorfakkan Amphitheatre and Waterfalls: Iconic Landmarks

Upon reaching Khorfakkan city, visitors can explore the Khorfakkan waterfalls and amphitheatre, both of which are significant landmarks in the area. The waterfalls, carved into the rocky Al Sayed mountain, overlook the Khorfakkan Corniche and the Gulf of Oman. The amphitheatre, inaugurated in 2020, draws inspiration from Roman architecture and serves as a picturesque backdrop for visitors.

5. Al Suhub Rest House: A Scenic Conclusion

To conclude the trip, Al Suhub Rest House, situated approximately 600 meters above sea level, offers breathtaking views of Khorfakkan. Inaugurated by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in 2021, this location has quickly become a popular destination for residents. The winding drive up the mountain and the panoramic vistas of Khorfakkan at sunset provide a fitting end to the journey.
