Born on February 6, 1945, Bob Marley would have celebrated his 70th birthday this Friday. Unfortunately, his journey was cut short in 1981, yet his influence and legacy continue to resonate around the globe, arguably growing more impactful over the decades.
Bob Marley isn’t just a name; he is synonymous with reggae music. He transcended local sounds from the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, to global stardom, rallying people around universal themes of love, peace, and resilience. In homage to this iconic artist, Dubai will host a special reggae festival, making waves in the local music scene.
Reggae Beachfest Celebrates Marley
Taking place at the XL Beach Club at the Habtoor Grand on Saturday, February 7, the Reggae Beachfest promises not just music but a full celebration of Marley’s enduring legacy. Dancehall star Mr. Vegas is set to headline the event, offering a blend of rhythm and memories influenced by the great Marley himself.
Interview with Organizer Adonai
We had the chance to sit down with the festival organizer, Adonai, to delve deeper into this vibrant celebration.
What can we expect from the reggae fest?
This ‘Bob Marley Birthday Bash’ is going to be an unforgettable experience. Last year, we brought in the legendary Dawn Penn, who lit the stage at a sold-out show. This year, we are thrilled to feature MOBO award-winner Mr. Vegas, who will surely bring that special Jamaican energy to the stage.
How special is it to coincide with Bob Marley’s birthday?
It’s incredibly special for us. Knowing that we are part of global celebrations honoring Marley’s birthday is humbling and inspiring.
Is there a regular reggae scene in Dubai?
The reggae scene here is gradually expanding. We’ve noticed significant growth and are excited to be instrumental in developing this cultural facet in the city.
What motivated you to start this festival?
Having lived in Jamaica for over 12 years and worked with numerous reggae legends, I saw a unique opportunity here in Dubai. The diverse cultures present create a fertile ground for reggae, and I wanted to share this vibrant culture with the community.
Would you like to see more reggae in Dubai?
Absolutely! I envision reggae spreading not only through festivals but also within clubs and radio stations across the city.
Is reggae compatible with the culture in Dubai?
Completely! The beauty of reggae is its universality. Dubai, being a melting pot of cultures, is the perfect home for reggae music, as we’ve witnessed diverse crowds at our monthly events.
What brought you to Dubai?
Originally from Kenya, I moved to Jamaica early on. My first visit to Dubai was with a dancehall artist on tour, and I fell in love with the city. A couple of years later, I decided to establish a reggae business here.
What do you enjoy most about reggae music?
The beat, the lyrics, the energy—it’s all incredibly infectious!
Spotlight on Mr. Vegas
We also spoke with the headline act, Mr. Vegas, well-known for his hit record “Heads High,” which has made waves in the reggae scene since its release.
How do you feel about performing in Dubai?
It’s an honor to perform on Bob Marley’s birthday! Dubai has this magnetic allure; everyone dreams of visiting. I plan to bring my hits from the last 17 years, packed with energy to keep the crowd moving.
What’s the global response to reggae?
Bob Marley introduced the world to reggae music. It’s a genre that conveys messages of love, peace, and celebration. His influence is felt by all reggae artists, providing the inspiration each time we write songs.
Do you believe you have the best life in the world?
I wouldn’t say I have the best life; I think every life holds its beauty. Life is simply magnificent.
How is living in Jamaica, and how does it influence your music?
Jamaica is the best place to live; the food, the landscapes—everything is vibrant! The culture there is a constant source of inspiration, giving me endless stories to tell through my music.
Who should we be watching in the dancehall and reggae scene right now?
Look out for artists like Dexta Daps, Latty J, and War Lincoln in 2015!
How are female artists viewed in the genre, and what changes would you like to see?
It’s challenging for female artists in reggae. There’s still a perception that they can’t achieve the same success as male counterparts. I’d love to collaborate with Tessanne Chin. Women in reggae need more opportunities!
What do you have lined up for the future?
I’m working on a reality show titled “Bruk it Down to Reality,” alongside producing music and collaborating with artists. The journey continues!
